  • 26week phase 1 (ENG F/D)

I have just received my Joining instructions from SSTG and have noticed that phase 1 starts on the 06/09/10 and sea-phase starts from 19/03/2010.
I was under the impression that Phase 2 happened around January. i guess this was for the HND or the Deckies .
just looked then on there website (SSTG)
    and for engineers it is

    FD
    Introduction
    At College 3 weeks
Introduction to programme and professional safety courses.

    Short Course / Certificates acquired:

    Elementary First Aid (EFA)
    Fire Prevention & Firefighting (FF(B) )
Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (PSSR)
    Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

    Phase 1
    At College 25 weeks
    Foundation degree studies.

    Short Course / Certificates acquired:

    none

    Phase 2 At Sea
    24 weeks
Introduction to life at sea. Work based learning (Operational Level). MNTB engineer training record book.

    Short Course / Certificates acquired:

    none
so i guess its 6 at college for 5 at sea. should be fun
    Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why

Those dates don't take into account the opening and shutting times of the colleges, or public holiday periods like Easter and Hallowe'en do they. I imagine they're probably broken up a bit accordingly. It seems unlikely they would send cadets to sea during the dark stormy months - I reckon sea phases will be after St Paddies day, because of BST.

    Some useful guides

It seems the schedules are probably different for each permutation of course.

yeah... Engine tends to have the sea phase later than deck

The deckies i know have told me jan/feb for them
and the paperwork i have 28/03/2011 is my first week at sea

Halloween is a public holiday?? While like everything it varies by college... At Warsash you get 2 weeks off at Christmas and 2 weeks at Easter (that's if you are actually at college then - if you are at sea you will most likely not!)

All the colleges and courses go to sea at different times. Deck have to do a minimum of 12 months at sea, which is done over (usually) 2 sea periods. Engineers have a 6 months (I believe) minimum requirement for the MCA.

Even within your college and course you will all goto sea at different times dependant upon when your company arranges for you to join / leave ship.
?Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn?t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.?

Effectively that bit between Halloween and Bonfire night is usually the school and college half term.
If I were in charge, I would make it a week long holiday - as well as joining up that pointless perineum of a working "week" between Crimbo and New Year... you need something to look forward to through the dark half!

The dates definitely vary by course according to the links, but the colleges seem to be working by the same schedule - which makes sense if you think about it... companies with people at more than one college. There can't be a lot of wiggle room on the dates and what has to be done and availability of staff and facilities.

I doubt that has even occurred to anyone. Under the old school HND regime the September intake would be at sea in October enjoying the weather in whatever part of the world they were sent to. If you were in the North Sea, well, you'd better get used to a bit of rough sooner rather than later.
