Offshore vessels or Containerships??

Hi

Im starting with clyde in september and was contacted today asking if i wanted an interview with "gulf offshore". If i were to get a job with this company i would probably work on PSV's in the north sea, and if not i would most probably be with either Zodiac or Odfjell.

However I'm not sure wether i want to work in the offshore sector or on big container ships, bulk carriers ect.

I think i would enjoy the more exciting work on offshore vessels and usually with good up to date technology and ships, however i would probably be stuck in the north sea and would like the cargo ships for worldwide travel and their awesome size etc.

i was wondering if anyone has got any experience or advise on what they would prefer to do.

How is knowing what someone else prefers going to help you work out what you prefer?!

Sounds like what you really want is to do OSVs in somewhere sweaty, like off the Brazilian coast perhaps?
I would imagine that you would either have to get experience in the North Sea first; or join a large containership company that also has an OSV fleet.

I would imagine that, seeing as though your primary interest is OSVs, that you would want to spend your time training on them, as that would seem to be more likely to lead to working on OSVs in more faraway locations.
I suspect that it would be easier to move from OSVs to container ships than the other way round, due to the more specialist experience you would get.

I wonder whether it might be helpful to design a simple software "MN Career Selector" to kind of force people to be honest with themselves about what their priorities are.

just interested in what areas of shipping other people are interested in and why. And while I am very interested in OSV work i would also like the container-ships, just undecided what way to go and wondered if anyone had any experience that could help me decide
