  • BP Phone Interview

    Hello to all,

After six months of daily viewing on the forum, I've finally got round to writing my first post, so here goes!

So I'm an aspiring engine cadet, who will be graduating from university this July with a mechanical engineering degree. Having waited so long for my LIA I was late applying to companies and only managed the BP, Maersk and Shell deadlines. Having already had an interview with Maersk (unsuccessful on gaining a cadetship) I now have a phone interview with BP this Thursday! I'm confused to whether or not the phone interview will be of the same nature as other cadetship interviews (why do you want to go to sea, why engine not deck...etc?) or is it of different nature, surely the same questions would come up in a face to face interview, if successful?

Having had the interview with Maersk really helped me with knowing what sort of questions will come up and they gave me feedback saying I was desperately unlucky having had a really good interview but struggled with knowing what an engine cadet's responsibilities are on-board a ship? I personally thought that a cadet had no real solid responsibilities on-board other than do what a senior watch keeper would tell you to do...obviously I was wrong! I would be really grateful if anyone could help me on this subject?

Also anyone heard back from shell? Only had the conformation e-mail, I later sent them three other emails with no replies...?

    Thanks

I have a feeling BP are based in Singapore, so they don't do face to face interviews! A BP cadet told me he only did a phone one, though that was a few years ago so their policy may have changed?

Thanks for the reply Inland Pirate, but I was told on the email, that if successful in the phone interview that a face to face interview would happen at the isle of man...

I applied online for BP and on their online job portal my application is marked as 'received' and was told they would progressively respond to candidates. We have a few things in common, I am also coming from University and was unsuccessful at interview with Maersk, make of that what you will.

Fingers crossed I hear something soon.

        Good Luck.

I was sent the email around 2 weeks ago now I think, my application is now marked as "interviewing", I'd get in touch with them if I was you.. I've seen some of your recent posts and yes we do seem to have a lot in common, have you also applied to shell?

Fingers crossed indeed and good luck to you too..

I did apply to Shell but I dont believe their is an online portal, like BP, to check up on the status of an application. I have emailed them to request an update, but nothing as of yet.

Also when it comes to questions I know of others who have been asked questions such as..

'Name as many different types of ships'
'If you were sailing from Southampton to China, how would one get there?'.
'What do you expect to see in the engine room?'
'What do you expect to see in the control room?'
'What is the first thing you would do upon arrival to your first ship?'
'You are the only British National on your vessel, how would you deal with this?'
'What do you expect the working hours to be?'
'What do you expect to be doing?'

A big, feck off, shiny engine that purrs like a kitten.....

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

Engineers stood around drinking coffee, tapping dials and pushing buttons that flash?

                  Board it?

With your avatar, they might be a bit concerned about the boarding bit. No swinging on ropes now....

It'll make you memorable though! Swinging in on a crane hook to land square in the bridge wing door way! Much quicker than the gangway and stairs approach!

Aye, but I can't see HSE being happy with you doing it with a sword between your teeth going "har de har har"...

I'll tie em to the mast (or suitable alternative) until they agree that it might be the best thing they ever did see, and agree to make it standard practice!

Found out this morning that my BP application has been unsuccessful. I'm bitterly disappointed.
