I just wanted to post a thread more for information purposes....
I'm about to leave the Access course for Merchant Navy and I wasn't aware of the course until 3-4 months ago.
The course is designed for those who are looking to join the Merchant Navy but don't meet the academic qualifications needed. Half the time is spent on these which are Physics, English, Maths and IT. All at Intermediate 2 level with the exception of Physics however I understand that as of next in-take this will be brought up to Intermediate level 2. All the other subjects are sea related e.g. chartwork, navigation, meterology, health and safety and seamanship.
Although I had the grades I was a mature student who had not been in school for 13 years so wanted to improve my chances of getting a cadetship by completing it. I've since been offered a cadetship starting in January so won't be going back to complete the course however I've found it to be really useful in terms of refreshing my academic skills and learning about sea related topics and having a good understanding now of the career.
The course is well run and students not from the island can stay in the local bridge centre which is just like any other student accommodation from what I understand.
Anyway, for more info here is the link to the course details and again would highly recommend for aspiring cadets.
