Hi I've just read somewhere on an application form that if I have visible tattoos that I cannot join! Is this the same for every company?

my tattoos that would be visible if not wearing a long sleeve shirt are on each of my wrists. They are nothing offensive and I often cover them effectively with makeup if I'm going to interviews or I'm wearing a nice dress and don't want them on show. Will these hinder me from getting onto a cadet scheme?

thanks again and sorry to ask again so soon!!!

That sort of thing tends to apply to cruise companies, not cargo...

Most cruise lines have a strict "no visible tattoos" policy and therefore yes, you would be unable to work for them with the tattoos you described. HOWEVER this is only cruise ships and other sectors of the industry don't have a problem with it. There were several people in my class with lower arm tattoos and it was fine. Of course they didn't work on cruise ships.

Yea, on the cargo ships you can turn up to the bridge with a pair of shorts and a t-shirt on..... the presentation standards aren't the big deal, it's all about the cargo

Although it does apply to cruise ships more I have seen several people with them, I dunno if their getting a bit more laid back about it or maybe cause they got it after being employed.

I wouldn't let it hinder any of your applications just be sure to ask about it, suppose it is all down to placement of tattoo and maybe rank. Don't really wear long sleeve when on cruise ships, except in colder countries. (Think that applies to most companies)

If you're able to cover them up effectively with makeup then I can't see it being a huge problem.

No big issues that I can see, we have lots of people with tattoos on show. Content would probably be the biggest issue but if its not offensive then no probs.

Be aware if going to an interview that people can be biased so covering up at that stage might be beneficial.
If you can't laugh, you shouldn't have joined!!

Just to get some confirmation, I have a tattoo on my forearm and I am aware I'll be wearing short sleeve shirts whilst in college when I start in September. Do you guys think it would be a problem as such?

The tattoo itself is pretty much the same as Johnny Heitinga's who plays for Everton. (I don't support Everton)

                  cheers

Yeah, massive problem as you got a tattoo copied from Heitinga......That's a sackable offence in itself surely?!

While in theory it shouldn't make any difference. First impressions do matter. I would be very wary of getting tattoos as you will have a lot of job interviews in the near future. It might be wrong but people are judged by what they look like.

oh jheeze, thanks for the advice mate. haha! I should have foreseen the replies of this nature!

but in all seriousness, its one that can be covered with long sleeve shirts easily so job interviews etc aren't a problem

It won?t be a problem for the college and so long as your sponsor was aware of it at your interview then it won?t be a problem with them either.

Some cruise companies have a strict, no tattoos policy, others work it on an individual basis.
