  • Overseas applications and none UK residents

    Hello,

I would like to become a deck cadet with a major shipping or cruise company and I have started to apply to the various sponsors that recruit cadets for the September 2014 intake. I am currently in year 11 at an international school in Spain and expect to obtain the necessary grades in my iGCSEs to qualify for a HND placement. I have noticed on some of the applications that it states that EU citizens must be resident in the UK for 12 months before applying and during one on line application it stated that this is due to the Government funding that is given for the cadet places. Myself and my family are British citizens and my parents own a UK company and pay UK taxes, although we have been residents in Spain for the past 6 years. Does anyone know if my application will not be valid or not as I have not been a UK resident for the past 12 months?

You will need to contact the companies you are interested in and ask them.

In theory you can apply with no problems. I know folks in a similar position who have. Bear in mind they do read this forum, so be open and honest with them.

That was the impression I was under although that is just from what I've read on here and I don't know the full rules in depth. The fact that the OP is a UK citizen may make a difference, although has had been mentioned the only way to be sure would be to get in touch with the companies and or the MCA, MNTB, and colleges for clarification. Unless someone has a copy of the rules somewhere?

MGN 455 has the rules. Page 6. Also covers what ships cadets should be training on, flags, duties of DSTO'S what qualifications training officers onboard should have, lots of information in it.

              ?Hola ni?o!

The best thing to do is speak to a few companies and see what they say.

I know of a British cadet who lived in Spain and still studied in the UK, but I think she may have had a UK address as well, if you have family in the UK then you may be able to use their address for the application process.

Have seen your other thread and with the GCSE results that you are predicted you should be in with a good chance, hope all goes well for you.
