  • Warsash FD term times

I'm still trying to fully work out how the FD at Warsash pans out. They say:

Phase 1 is 3 weeks intro plus another 17 weeks. Does that take it until past Christmas?

Phase 2 at sea for 8 months! That's can't be all in one go right? I'd get bored stiff after 8 months as I'm sure most others would. Or is there some leave/holiday in there somewhere?

It's a pitty they don't do a calendar with week numbers starting from zero when you join so that you can see roughly when each phase will start and end.

It's 8 months long and you'll do two ships at just under 4 months each.

If it helps you with the weeks, at warsash this is week 44.

The September 2010 FD Deck course will start from Monday 6th September 2010, with cadets normally moving in on the 5th, but full joining details will be sent to you closer to the date. The FD cadets will have a "fresher" week, with inductions for IT, the library, the University main campus, talks about your career and a few social activities. You'll also get a planner showing all the FdSc assessments that you need to take and pass through your course, including the planned dates for each phase, and the assessment dates.

After the fresher week, there will be 13 weeks of tuition for phase one, followed by a exam week on the week starting 13th of December. You'll then have two weeks of Christmas leave from WMA, returning for your short courses and briefings for sea on the 3rd of Jan 2011. This will take three weeks, so as of Monday the 24th of Jan 2011, you'll be ready to go to sea!

If you have any queries, please don't hesistate to contact WMA directly.

Is the above the same starting date for HND?

The starting date is the same, however the first phase of the HND is shorter - you should be ready for sea by the end of Christmas!

Do HND still only spend 6 weeks in college in phase 1 like I did, or has that been changed now?

Looks like 15 now. From what I can see, the HND phases have been brought broadly in line with the FD phases.

                Re: Warsash FD term times

The HND course phase one is now 15 weeks, and includes more maths, science and study skills, as well as the induction and STCW short courses. Although the phases are closer to the FD course model, they don't match exactly, and the subjects taught in each phase, and the approach taken, are different.

Ah right, so the HND will be going to sea just before Christmas then?
