What makes you want to go to sea?

Hi, as I'm currently an applicant and hoping to get into a cadetship asap, I was wondering what some of the other aspiring Deck / Engine cadets have as reasons for wanting to do their career?

I want to do this job as ships are fascinating, and the way they are run are so impressive that I want to spend my life operating them and learning about them! I could probably type all day!

I love being on the water

9-5 with 2 days a off a week kills me.

I don't really like work, so go to sea instead. What's the point in working more than 6 months a year.

I get paid to stare out of the windows for 8hrs a day! (And my teachers always told me I'd never get anywhere just staring out the window!) Also, tried office, retail, service etc, they suck.

Your reasons for being at sea change as time goes by... but at the moment mine are:
1. Salary
2. Work / Life balance (where else do you get 5 months of holiday a year?)
3. Amazing and engaging travelling (depending on who you work for...)
4. Working with interesting people
5. I like driving ships!
6. Varied and interesting work - no day is the same.

Always been fascinated by maps/ charts and navigation- I genuinely love the Navigation side (even the old school stuff), the first week in college I knew it was for me , everything just clicked into place (in that it felt right, not that everything made sense immediately!) and my first sea phase even more so, plus I'm pretty practical have never enjoyed sitting in an office (well there's a lot of paperwork at sea too but... there's still a good mix of hands on stuff) and getting to play with ships, manouver/ sail is fantastic....

.... well that and the circus was full .

Me too. I started sailing at uni and loved it. I really enjoy anything to do with nav and seamanship. I even taught myself to splice three strand Now to learn the seamanship again but bigger.

I have been brought up in an area surrounded by the sea, always been involved with boats. From a young age I wanted to be a deck officer, however my ENG 1 says I'm not allowed to look out windows so I'll be down stairs in the engine room. However, looking back it doesn't bother me that much, as I have been attracted more to the look of the Engineering side as years passed.

I am want to join up due to the love I have for Chartwork/Navigation and Seamanship after being in the corps for 7 years I realised this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life

I'm probably a little old to join as a member, and now I'm starting at wma in September I don't think I'd be much use to them. But once I'm qualified and more settled I'll be looking into, that and a scout troop, as my time in scouts was fantastic and I want to pass it on.

For me its the holiday, doing hands on work rather than a sit down office job, no more commuting and the salary is ok too
