  • Getting the right criminal records check

Loving the forum by the way!

I've been asked by Clyde to provide a "voluntary criminal records check". Now, I worked in schools when I was younger & used to get a CRB disclosure form.
I have had a couple of cautions (more than 5 years ago) & never been convicted other than for a motoring offence. Any ideas what criminal records check / form I should be using to provide Clyde with the info they require.

I understand the main reason behind this to be for application of a US Visa...

So yeah, what forms / checks have you provided to your training companies / prospective employers?

& no jokes about the scouser with the criminal record!

One point, cautions are criminal records (despite how freely they seem to be issued) and depending on the offence, this may be an issue for you. You can obtain a criminal records check from disclosure Scotland without a requirement for company backing like the CRB check in the UK. This check will include anything valid on the UK database.

Yeah, I am aware they are still deemed part of a criminal record, the severity of the offence & also the punishment are apparently taken into consideration when applying for a visa. I just hope it doesn't hinder my initial application with a training company.

Within the UK the caution should expire after about 5 years, not sure about the motoring offence, but this doesn't really apply for the US Visa, they want chapter and verse. How that goes depends on what the cautions were for, if it relates to drugs or anything of a "moral turpitude" then it's game over right there as the US won't allow you in.

I would do what YM has said, get yourself a disclosure scotland....
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

All posts here represent my own opinion and not that of my employer.

The CRB has been changed slightly in recent years and now known as the disclosure and barring service (DBS). Another thing to point out - you can't do a criminal records check on yourself though the DBS - Clyde will have to be your sponsor for the application but as YoungMariner said you can do it though Disclosure Scotland ... but there are some differences.

With Disclosure Scotland you can only run a basic disclosure on yourself (not a standard or enhanced one) and it will only return UNSPENT convictions and will not return spent convictions, cautions and report of any registers - e.g. sex offenders. So wouldn't have thought this would have been much use.

If Clyde are asking you to do it I would have thought they should be the ones who start the process, send you the form and get you to fill in your part and it should be them who should send it to the DBS.

... as clear as mud :-s

Regarding the US visa issue: http://www.unlock.org.uk/xoffenders.aspx?sid=108#US

Or https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/reque...reply.doc.html if you are concerned about the source being a crims' handbook.
