  • What are the best (or all) sponsoring companies that use glasgow nautical college?

I know everybody says dont limit yourself to one place etc.. but glagow is 3 hours away from home as it is and id rather be in scotland. If anybody could help me with this it would be very appreciated. I am looking to apply as an engineer cadet for this year/next year. I know most companies have stopped giving places (maersk). And i have been granted an interview for clyde marine on the FD training programme but im not sure whether to go this year or not (still in school, 16 years old) and go for a better company.
    Thanks for the help!

My advice to you would be to take the Clyde offer.

as you said, don't limit yourself but with any company, its unlikely you will get the nearest college to home. Companies tend to send you far from home to get you used to being away. I was fortunate as I requested Fleetwood and got it but I don't think anyone else in my class actually asked for Fleetwood. Your best bet is to go for all interviews you are offered, and take the best offer (perhaps regardless of which college a company offer). Hope that helps

I am indeed. I'm about to go away on my first sea phase tomorrow so just going through the various article on this site to make sure I've packed everything I need.
Sponsor companies have their pluses and negatives and if you get more than one offer then deffo take your time looking over each one, but in my opinion the most important part from the engine cadetship is your ticket at the end, and you'll get that whichever company you're with.
There's a few guys in my year who were 16 when they joined the course and I have great respect for them. I don't know if I could have gone to sea for 4 months at that age. If you don't feel like you're ready then certainly take an extra year to think about it, but keep in mind an offer from Clyde is (in my opinion) just as good as any other sponsor company.
Oh and good luck with your interview!

It mostly seems to be Clyde or SSTG. I am almost finished and there is no-one in my intake sponsored by anyone else. I think there are a few engineers kicking about who are sponsored by Viking but I don't know them.

Can't speak for the engine department but if you are only 16 I would perhaps consider doing the HNC/D route. On the deck side the PD is a lot more fast paced and I don't think I would've been able to do it at 16. Most of the younger guys ended up dropping out. Thats not to say it can't be done, I know one guy who started at 16 and is still here but I would have a serious think about it. Depends on your own ability I guess.

Most of the people in my intake are from Scotland so there is certainly a good chance of being sent here...although you could equally end up getting sent to the other end of the country.

I stay up in Scotland too, however tomorrow I travel down to Plymouth to do my Deck exams - which is a nine hour train journey.

It's entirely up to you. However, I would be careful as to what you put on here - lots of people are watching! Now, I understand your positive factors for the decision of going to Glasgow may be for the travel convenience. For someone to say this is the prime reason for selecting that training institution may not be best.

It is a difficult one, think it over.
