  • ENG1 Medical Certificate - sight test

Does anyone know what the sight requirement is for obtaining the yacht-master offshore with STCW-95?

My eyesight is just good enough to obtain a UK driving license. I believe the standard for a UK driving license is 6 / 12 with both eyes. I wear glasses.

Does anyone know how that compares for the ENG1?

    Cheers,
    Dan

From the ENG1 Guide sticky thread:

"How good does my eyesight have to be?
    http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mca_doctor...al__links_.pdf
Page 244-245 tells you all you need to know.
Remember to bring your glasses if you need them."

If you visit your optician with these requirements, then he will tell you whether they are acceptable.

Oh an strangely enough, the seafarer sight requirements for Deck Officers are far stricter then those for an Airline Pilot (CAA Class 1)

6/60 in both eyes without glasses. 6/6 in your good eye and 6/12 in your not so good eye with glasses. Irrespective of wearing glasses or not you still have to meet the requirements with out visual aids. If you dont meet this requirement then its my understanding that you dont pass

I think this bit just confuses it. The key information is 6/60 both eyes without glasses. With glasses (if needed): 6/6 in better eye, 6/12 in worse.

Is it the biggest letter on top of the eye chart (E) that equals 6/60 vision?

I really hope it is, because it's the only letter I can see without glasses! :P

6/60 is the top line of the snellen chart

Right. Good! And having 6/60 vision makes you fit for lookout duties, I suppose?

My understanding is that if you can achieve 6/60 both eyes unaided and then can achieve 6/6 with or without glasses and have nothing else that would hinder you within the medical then you should be fine. You will also need to pass the ishihara test as part of the eyesight requirements. This is purely my interpretation and if i am wrong i apologise. Im sure someone will correct me. I havent undergone an eng1 and my fate will be decided may 10th.

pretty close. You only have to make 6/6 with glasses with one eye; the other eye has to achieve at least 6/12 with glasses
