Hello,

I'm new to the forum. This is my first real thread.

I'm just wondering for some of the people training and like myself, applying, what kind of thoughts do you have about the different kind of ships we could be working on?

So do you like the sound of say, container ships? Or cruise ships? And what do you think will be good/bad about them.

I'd just like to share opinions as I'm currently trying to decide which kind of companies I'd ideally like to train with or work for.

Hey SB and welcome. The general consensus is that you just apply to every company and hope you get in offered a position. If you are totally dedicated on working on a certain type of ship to the exclusion of all others, go for it but don't forget that you could be massively limiting your chances of a cadetship.

There a loads of threads on this site about the pros and cons of the different industry sectors and I'm sure if you lurked like I did then you've read them all, twice.

What appeals to you most?

I know that, And I'd be happy for any kind of company! I should have mentioned this is aimed more at training companies as such, who offer a range of different companies.

As for my personal opinions, I'm still deciding. Container ships are a favourite, I'd be happy with a company doing that for sure I'd say! Cruise ships look good, but I've read a lot of pros and cons on them. I've mostly travelled on ferries myself, and find them interesting. At the minute I'm more trying to choose between a type of ship that is more 'crew only' as opposed to with passengers. And also the deep sea vs set route decision!

In summary I would take what I'm given, but everyone elses opinions are of high value

I think most cadets prefer to work for an actual company like BP/Bibby, as opposed to a training agency like Clyde/SSTG. But with the competition like it is, and as you said, take what you can get.

And definitely go deep sea, there's a guy on my course who is with P&O ferries, and he's currently halfway through an eight month trip between Dover and Calais and Dover and Calais and Dover ad infinitum.

Short sea trips are good as well! After having my heart set on deep sea but going doing this instead, well, I think I like it better.
I mean, whats wrong with never leaving the North Sea?

several things I can think of. If you spend your whole life in the North Sea you think the sea is either grey or white, and lumpy. You also forget what it is like to feel warm. Finally ports like Aberdeen, Peterhead and Lerwick in winter make you want to jump overboard. Finally you forget what a sunset looks like! Any more? LOL.

I take it you have not put in to Peterhead? A large, imposing granite prison on the cliff and a total of three trees, all growing sideways....
