  • south tyneside college open day

    Hi guys,

Anybody off to South Shields tomorrow? Just wondering what people are wearing? Might sound daft like but I have no idea what the dress code for stuff like this is

Never been to a open day before but will be going to this one tomorrow, sure people with more experience will be able to tell you. but obviously first impressions count, our company wants us to pop a long for a few hours and want us in our college uniform. So to be on the safe side id say smarten up, obviously at the end of the day their will be people there in full suits and probably some people who come along in full casual id say it depends how you wanna represent your self these could be your future employer

There is no official dress code - but then again you are meeting representatives from the companies - some of whom do handle the recruitment...

From helping out at the WMA ones when I was a cadet - most of the visitors were smart/casual or wearing suits - there were a few in jeans and t-shirts though...

            I'm going...

Last year I went the whole hog, suit and tie, fancy shoes, etc. When I got there though, I was surprised to see most of the attendees were in jeans and T-shirts. This year I'm thinking of taking a smart-casual approach, suit but no tie sort of thing.

Well I opted for casual in the end :-P seemed I made the right choice. Really enjoyed it today, took a lot from the day. What did other people think?

Did you get to see much of the college or was it just in a large hall?

Saw quite a bit actually, bridge trainer, classrooms ect. Also saw stuff like the gym and accommodation which was really helpful

Seemed good. Even had a Clyde Cadet saying how good Maersk were which was encouraging as I've got an offer from them

Did anyone check out the sailing facilities? Do they have their own boats like warsash? Opportunities to get part time work at the weekend? I couldn't make it otherwise I would have had a look myself

Not sure if they have boats or not. To be honest though mate it's about the college not the extras. You're gonna be spending a lot of time at sea anyway and I doubt you'd have time to sail and work ect. Especially part time jobs I'd say are a no go. I'll be quiting mine when I join in September so I can knuckle down and get through this part of it all then just get on with my career

Sadly the college doesnt have the rya courses and watersport rental like warsash. There is a dinghy club down by the beach but the North Sea doesnt seem very inviting to me.

I'd agree about part time jobs, but I know a few people who have worked in bars etc.

Yeah of course, but it seemed the essentials had already been covered
I'll be quitting my job in September as well, but when living on campus, it's easy enough to get work done in the evenings if you're disciplined, or even on Saturdays (leaves Sunday as a safety net in case something is harder than expected), which then leaves half the weekend free to have fun/earn a bit of spending money. Some of the financial packages going from some companies are just enough to cover rent and food. It's not going to affect my choice in the end, it's just good to know. Apparently if I get an offer from Clyde, they'd like to send me there.
