  • Making the most of Open Days

So with the Warsash Open Day on Friday, what's the best way to make the most out of it? Are there any things a prospective Deckie should definitely check out or do? Are there any particular people that one should try and meet? Anything to avoid doing?

    Cheers

    Hi Fergus

I would suggest you go with an open mind, even if you have you heart set on one particular company / ship types. Have a bit of an understanding what companies have what ship types ( or in the case of Clyde, Chiltern etc what companies they deal with).

See if you get a good vibe when talking to the rep at each stand, look smart and pick up any info they give you and write a few notes immediately after on the info they give so you can remember who said what! It is worth taking a notepad / pen.

Normally Warsash (always used to so can't guarantee!) have demonstrations with the coastguard helicopter and fire school which is quite fun to watch if you have never seen. Also you may have a chance to look in the Sim which may interest you.

Finally have a chat with the present cadets that are knocking around and ask them any questions that you may not feel comfortable asking the recruiters etc.

    Cheers

Thanks guys, really handy. I'm just in the process of making myself a timetable/critical path analysis to follow for the day to make sure I don't miss out on a demonstration when I'm queueing to chat to someone I could talk to later. I'm incredibly cool...

I'll be hovering around the Warsash Campus on Friday until late afternoon... the plan is that I know of:
                Usual helicopter demonstration
                Fire school demonstrations
                Companies present
Campus tours including fully operational bridge simulator and TRANSAS suite and engineering faculty
Life of a deck officer presentations
                Life of an engineer presentations
Lots of Cadets to ask questions too!

I don't suppose you know how long things like tours, life of a deckie talks and demonstrations take, do you?

I was thinking more along the lines of this:

and a Gantt chart, but only sort of, I'm not that cool...

                        oh I see, 7Ps exactly.

I actually hated Decision Maths, boring as hell. Algorithms for common sense and intuition.

"Find the shortest route", "That one", "no, use the algorithm", "Fine, 77+35=112, 112+25=137. 77+35=112, 112+23=135. Route B (that one) wins"

more marks for working than answers, woooo
