  • abit stuck with personal statement

Hey guys I've been working on a personal statement for a maersk application and i am struggling a bit.

I've managed to draft up a 268 word one and is a short as i can get it (maersk ask for around 250) on the application it is titled personal statement But the question it asks please write a short account ( about 250 words) stating why you wish to pursue a seafaring career.

so to me a personal statement is an account of about you. so it puzzles me a bit as it then says why you want to pursue a seafaring career.
so the statement i have drafted up is a bit about me then a bit on why i want to join the MN but i don't have space to include why i want maersk to sponsor me.

i don't know what to do

If they are specifically asking about why you want to go to sea, then try to thin down the stuff about you a little unless it directly relates to why you want to go to sea.

I would also say that there is no real need tpo say too much about why you want to be a Maersk cadet rather than why you want to go to sea at all, I would guess that they are looking more for someone who is committed to the career than someone who will be sycophantically loyal to Maersk at this stage. They will brain wash you on the sycophantic loyalty once they get you.

268 is close enough to 250 that it won't raise any eyebrows, it's not a GCSE English exam.

    Good luck.

Hello mate well basically my statement has the opening sentence which focuses on me as an individual and my characteristics, then it goes on to interests and i cover abit about maritime and my involvement with boats a kid then onto other interests which is mechanics and how 3 years of study have given me a keen insight into engineering.

moves onto sports involvement which relates to team work communication and strategy's to achieve goals/tasks then to round it off is why i want to pursue a seafaring career but i have writers block now and dont know how i could change it any more

Sounds good enough to me. Like I said, the borg will assimilate you when they have you in their clutches.

268 is about 250, but if you can cut a line or so you should be fine, dont think the Borg use a word counting machine, but they might

I think you need a bit more "indoctrination" from them...

well never mind Maersk after asking 2-3 times to make sure and being told, yes your qualifacations and engineering based diploma and quals are sufficient Maersk has refused my application on the Gcse bit and which has really quite annoyed me, i know they didnt say i would be successful further in the application process but they said it like written in stone your quals will not stop your application I'm sad now

OK, it's a setback and I understand your annoyance. *Hugs*

But, now would be the time to start investigating going back to college to re-do those GCSEs.

If you want this, you're going to have to be prepared to fight and slog for it, I have watched some people on this forum go through countless setbacks, disappointments and extra courses and they have all got there. And y'know what? I want people like that at sea, the ones with drive and dedication, the ones who deeply appreciate their position and take pride in doing their job to the best of their ability. Be one of those people

yep quite a setback but never mind!
Have looked into doing them gcses again its only 1 academic year.
still sending applications out to sponsor companies

It would not be to much of an inconvenience doing myt gcses again it will be worth it!

                              Just gotta see what happens!

                              cheers
