  • advice for which company to do cadetship with

I was given an offer for an engineering cadet ship with a cruise line in January,I accepted this offer, since then my expierence of this company hasnt been the best. although this company did pay for my medical they are not willing to pay for flights to warsash and have decreased the expected monthly bursary by a fair bit (although it isnt all about the money there would be a considarable difference between the two company's) .I have since been contacted by the company I origanly had wanted to work for and who other members of my family work for, this company wants me to go for an interview in a months time, when i should be starting uni with the other company.

If i accept the interview which may not be successful I would have to decline my sponsorship offer for the other company.Any advice would be appreciated.

Most companies will not pay for your flights to college, however if you point out that it is cheaper (assuming you're booking well in advance it normally is significantly) than taking the train, they will reimburse you for the cost.

You haven't mentioned companies, not that it really matters, but as I am sure you are aware - at the end of the day it doesn't really matter whom you complete your cadetship with, the training is essentially the same. The big question therefore is do you take the risk and hope you are successful at interview for the other company and delay starting till the next intake (I am assuming they aren't interviewing for the September start) - are you fairly confident that you would be successful?

Or, do you stick with your current company, pass your exams then apply to go work for this other company once you have your licence (assuming you still want to work for them in the future)...

As you can see, I haven't answered your question, the reason being - only you can make that decision...

the current company wont reimburse any travelling expenses to warsash but the other company will riemburse all traveling expenses. I didnt want to mention companies names incase they didnt like what ive said about them, although they are both cruise companies my brother did his cadetship with them and is still working there and other engineers have moved to his company from my sponsoring company. Would it be possible for me to start my cadetship with one company and then move to the other company (that i have higher regard for and offer better financial rewards) if the interview was succesful or is there not much point as the training is simliar and i would just move after I get my license.

It is generally not possible to switch once started due to funding issues (your 1st company will have already been granted funding for you.. so your second one won't)... also most companies won't touch other companies cadets :-)

Bare in mind that age old saying "the grass is always greener"

Switching company is difficult not just for the reasons Alistair gave. A lot of the time there will usually be a financial penalty attached to you leaving for no good reason (more money and travel expenses is not a good reason).

To be honest, I don't like the attitude your showing by saying you have little regard for your company. Remember, they are about to pay you to go and train as a ship's officer and that there is a whole hell of a lot of competition out there for places on these courses so getting into that one may not happen (your brother working there is not a guarantee). At this stage, financial rewards are not all that important, getting the ticket is important. Once you have the ticket then you will get the financial rewards and to leave a company over travel expenses is a bit silly.

What are the other problems because considering the competition for cruise ships I can't see the T&C being THAT bad...

Its not just the pay, im not really bothered about that, the company also is hard to contact and seems unorganised ( i know that they are busy, but some of my expreinces were unproffesional) and iam hopeing that this wont affect my training. It seems bad that ive got a bad impression of from a short time.

To be honest, most of the cruise companies have got their **** together when it comes to their cadets. Besides, you should see what it's like shoreside sometimes! Anywho, stop moaning, get your head down and get on with it. It's only 3 years...
