Uniforms

hi seeing that i haven't heard anything about equipment and uniforms i need, any chance you guys can give me a quick list of what i need so i can start looking for things and pricing things up

Do your company not supply your uniform? My company told me that I would receive my uniform the day before I start college, however I was sent a list of the stuff and asked for measurements, I'll see if I can find it.

Depends on the agency you are with. However, as standard: -

Smart black shoes (with polish),
Black or Grey trousers,
Plain white shirts (you don't need pilot shirts yet)
Plan black blazer/suit jacket (blazer being preferable)
Plain black tie
Plain black jumper (maybe)

The rest like boilersuits and safety gear will be provided to you when you actually start as you won't need it for the first week or two. What they will give you will be two sets of clean white boiler suits and one pair of black safety shoes/boots. As you're an engine cadet, before going to sea I would advise you to get yourself a decent set of ear defenders (not a cheap kind) as the quality of whats on ship will vary and I'd rather have my own that no one else has sweated in to (trust me, you're going to sweat). I always tended to buy my own safety gear as I was always guarenteed then of having stuff I preferred and actually fitted. Only difference from when I was a cadet and now is that I get the money back!

What college are you going to? Being a Fleetwood cadet I can tell you that the standard there is:

Black trousers
Black shoes
Pilot shirts
Navy blue Nato Jumpers
Black tie (Your company might provide their own tie, but get one just in case - personally I think black is smarter regardless)
Epaulettes (It's a good idea to get 2 sets, one for the NATO and one for the shirt)

If your company is Clyde Marine then they will probably ask you to get a blazer, but apart from them I haven't seen anyone else wear them.

Until last year Fleetwood was a decky college, and so it is still run as such. Maybe the engineers at other colleges are allowed to wear grey trousers and normal shirts as GM suggests, but I couldn't tell you. Either way, you can't go wrong with the above; It's the standard uniform.

It is not a deck vs engineer thing (for once ), but rather a generational thing, and was required rather than 'allowed'. Until a few years ago the standard college uniform did not involve epaulettes, trousers were grey rather than black, and it was theoretically blazers all round, even if many did not wear them in practice. The suggested reason being that having a different uniform at college from that used at sea meant that you kept the seagoing stuff in better nick. I also think there is something wrong with wearing rank around college and was very surprised to see it when first encountered a few years ago.

Miller Rayner
SM Bass
Clyde Marine Uniforms (Online shop).

I can't vouch for SM Bass, but I can tell you that Miller Rayner are good quality, although recently they seem to have bumped up their prices quite considerably. Clyde Marine are okay, but I didn't particularly like their shirts, but they have reasonable prices.

Miller Rayner charge ?10 for postage, but I can't say for the others

Can't say I know of any local shops in your part of the world danny, as IRI5HJ4CK says miller rayner are quite good.

I was in a little while ago and noticed their prices are up, apparently they've switched suppliers for some items. From what I've seen the quality is a little nicer
