  • Current serving member of royal navy looking to transfer

    Hey folks,

My name is Steve and I'm currently serving in the Royal Navy Submarine service which I have done so for the past 10 years. My trade is currently as a warfare specialist dealing with navigation /radar and the tactical (torpedo) side of things. I also work with high pressure systems including Air,N2 and hydraulics

Im looking to peruse a career as a deck officer. I already have completed the STCW95 courses in the past with the RN. I have my C grade GCSE's - only one I am missing is physics which I intend to do. I have and NVQ 2 in performing engineering ops (could this be used as a alternate to physics?) I have many more quals but don't want to take to much of your time up lol.

Im just wondering if anyone can give me some advice and what companies to write to. I'm due to leave the RN in August 2013. I have applied to the clyde marine training college so waiting for a reply from them.

Can someone also let me know if I would have to complete the full course or be able to do a smaller course with the qualifications I have already got I.e the STCW 95 courses?

    Thanks in advance
    Steve

With experience like that, you will certainly walk into a cadetship- no problem.

After I gave up on trying the RFA twice; I went about contacting most of the companies on the careers at sea website, to see if my qualifications that I had would count for things; and most of them came back to be with really generic responses, i.e, we need 5 GCSE's at C or above until we go any further. My advice to you, is to put all what you've said there in writing; and contact them all, maybe give them a ring, and have a chat? Not all of them will get back to you, because of your age...I am assuming you're at least 26? Have you considered the RFA? I reckon the reason I didn't get in there, as a comms rating, was because there was too many ex RN going for it. They're not allowed to pick RN over civies, but, I was "pipped to the post by people with seagoing experience"

Get that Physics nailed, and you'll be good to go!

What rank do you currently hold, because I believe that with certain qualifications and rank you can easily transfer across to the Engineering stream with maybe the Oral only? (or maybe not, I'm not sure. I work with guys that have done this so I'll ask them).
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

As far as I'm aware, yes you can, but it's very difficult to do so, i'm sure someone else can explain this a bit further.

As of last Wednesday (when a friend applied), the RN currently has a 18 month waiting list of people wanting to join...

You can tx but the best option is to go to your local Afco to tote up your Ucas points.

As an potential officer you have to attend various tests including the admiralty interview board

Best place to ask is rum ration just search through google

                Hope that helps

Try the seven point white star line, big box boats, and a thing for-.....more mature cadets, and at least one ex-RN cadet on their books already.

*other companies are available, terms and conditions apply :-)

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

In my cadet stream there is an ex-navy fellah who is with clyde marine as well as one with the aformentioned pointy star brigade. As far as I can tell they look on it as an advantage.

Presumably by "STCW 95 courses" you mean the mandatories - PSSR, PST, Elementary First Aid and Basic Firefighting - obtained through RN basic training and BSSC etc.? Navigational watch rating certificate and steering certificate? (W)ECDIS? Any others?

They don't amount to much of the cadetship so chances are you'll get to do them again.

Steve's not a back-afty so this won't work for him.

+ You now have to redo (most of) them every 5 years now anyway
