  • Revision topics

G'day. I was wondering, if anyone's got the time, if someone could reel off a list of important topics I should brush up on before starting the FD course. I suppose it'll mostly be Physics and Maths stuff at higher GCSE level. Any advice?

    Re: Revision topics

I'm not sure about the FD, but the maths revision for HND will be the same.
Regardless of this, I've covered most of the topics anyway.
The best advice I can give you would be to revise, trigonometry especially SOHCAHTOA. Transposing formule and mulitplying out brackets, this comes up alot especially at the later stages.
Try looking at some of Napiers Rules, that will help you with great circles. Much of it is just standard maths. I have a PDF of the Warsash maths revision book somewhere. I'll try and locate it and send it to you

      Re: Revision topics

Thanks alot. I'll try and break out some of my old revision books this week. Let me know if you have any luck finding that PDF. Sounds like that would be helpful.

...there are still links on the wiki about this...

(I'll start sorting out the wiki properly in July probably)

Those are all good, I was talking about a PDF document that warsash produces internally with specific topics

Any help (steps for solutions etc...) that anyone can be bothered to upload to the wiki as a set of small jpegs (I haven't set up LaTeX just yet), is very welcome.

I will try and abridge the PDF and extract the best revision topics from it

                  Re: Revision topics

Hmmm, it momentarily escaped my attention that this course does have some maths involved. Think I may need to do some revision myself!

                    Re: Revision topics

It's a good idea to do some revision, it made it easier when I started. Do remember though you won't be expected to be an expert, they will teach you what you need to know.

                      Re: Revision topics

Randomist, any chance you could send me that PDF too please?

I've been spending my free lessons this week learning trigonometry (for right-angled triangles), and have pretty much mastered that. Next week I'll focus on learning the sine & cosine rule for non-right angled triangles.

I did my GCSE Maths seventeen years ago, so am now pretty much learning it all from scratch, and would love an internal Warsash revision book so I can focus on relevant topics and not learn anything I don't need.

                      Thank you

No worries =] may have to abridge some of it. In any case I will copy down some of the main revision points for you

                          Re: Revision topics

I've got a MASSIVE (800+ pages) engineering mathematics book propping up my computer screen. Had it when I did Civil Engineering but that was 5 years ago and I've not looked at it since.

                              Re: Revision topics

The joining instructions came with a Maths CD we need to prepare us for entry to the Foundation Degree.
It all looks pretty straight forward (although I have no idea what to do with a quadratic equation).
I was surprised there was no trigonometry on there though!
I don't think I'll need that PDF afterall Randomist

Anyone know if we have to remember the formulas for volumes of shapes, and the formula for
quadratic equations? Or are they provided on the test paper?
