  • Restarting a Cadetship for 2nd time

    Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone has experienced the position I am in currently or has any advice?
Basically I started in Warsash in September a few years back.
I left just after I returned from Phase 2 after being away four four months, I decided to leave the Merchant Navy when I retuned from sea, at the time my reasoning behind it was that I was offered a salaried position at my previous employer and decided that I wanted to work in retail.
In the past few months I have realised I don?t want to carry on with a career in retail and I want a career at sea. I am often out on the water sailing with friends and deep down my passion for a Merchant Navy career has only grown over the past few years. Looking back now I believe at the time I was too young and not ready for the career I was embarking on. I have decided that this is now the route I want to take and I am leaving my current company and giving up a higher salary to do this. I know second chances are few and far between..
I have been told I might struggle to find a sponsoring company as government funding will have already been paid. I am happy to even pay for the first two phases myself,
If anyone have give any ideas/guidance I would appreciate it!

    Thanks!

    Hello!

It's a difficult situation and one I'm hesitant to advise on, though I'm sure there'll be some bits of wisdom shared by forum members.

In the meantime, welcome to the site, great to have you here and best of luck!

      Well, hello and welcome!

That being said, I'm sorry to say but you *may* have a difficult time getting a 2nd Cadetship unless you can think up an excellent reason for leaving the first time and you are able to get your funding again.

My advice, apply to as many companies as you can, don't leave out the first cadetship, and hope for the best.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

        Hi Beats,

I'm looking for a second cadetship also, albeit due to a different reason, so i've applied to near enough all providers and just waiting for replies at the moment.

Just for your information BP and SSTG both have the option to 'tick' saying about a previous cadetship, so at least it shows they have thought about that aspect.

          Hi to all,

I too am in the same position, I feel I was too young at the time which did not prepare me for my experience at sea. Cut a long story short, my Captain, Chief Engineer and 2nd were all dismissed and taken to the MCA after a 3 month spell at sea. My confidance was shattered! I got as far as an interview with BP which to be fair I struggled to prepare working for long hours at work.

Has anyone had any success in the past week?

This was with Clyde Marine, sponsored by Allocean Limited in 2007. They were not following correct procedures, the oily water seperator did not work so I doubt I would have to explain what water was being discharged overboard? Oil mist detector for M/E did not work, we were anchored offshore in Nigeria for over a month without fresh water, this was lovely!
