  • OOCL Anyone?

I have been offered OOCL by SSTG and was wondering if anyone has been with them or knows anyone that has?

They seem a big outfit but I was reading this blog today and it doesn't exactly make the company sound the best. http://davidops.spaces.live.com/blog/fa ... =765934174

    Re: OOCL Anyone?

Well I have no knowledge of OOCL but I have read that blog you posted. To me the guy doesn't seem to have had it too bad at all! Apart from some comms issues with other officers I think he seemed to be pretty involved and getting good training benefit from it all. I've seen guys treated much much worse, myself included! So maybe not as bad as you think!

        Re: OOCL Anyone?

Ive just read this lad's blog and to be honest he strikes me as a bit of a dick.
Ive on had worse on my ships as well, he seems to have got it quite easy and it sounds like a fairly decent crew, especially as he got so much training done.

I can understand some of his frustrations, but you should always check with your officers that you know precisely what they want done and then there are no problems.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

All posts here represent my own opinion and not that of my employer.

Personally, my main interest is increasing numbers of members and amount of content.

From my POV, he might bring in more members indirectly, and add some content.

              Re: OOCL Anyone?

Bigjohn did you decide to go with OOCL then?? Nice one mate.

Im just finishing off phase 1 of the PD at Glasgow and should be off to sea sometime after 21 june, so any further info you need i will be happy to try and help with once im at sea.

Andy S, OOCL seem ok so far. I havent had a huge amount of dealings with them as such, mainly with SSTG, but from all ive heard from cadets and lecturers they sound good.

Any of you going to GCNS??

If any of you are, lets just say Its an experience!!

              Good luck guys.

                  Re: OOCL Anyone?

I think the guy in the blog I linked to at the start of this post is maybe just someone who it didn't work out for and then he got p***ed off at the company and wanted to rant about it.
It's good to know that OOCL seem ok from what you lot are saying. Any more info at all anyone can throw at me I would be greatful for.

Provided all the paperwork etc checks out ok with SSTG/OOCL I will be heading down to Warsash in September. Not signed on the dotted line yet but have accepted the place by email.

I think I'm having a bit of an "oh **** what have I just signed up for" moment. It all seems to be a bit more real and scary now that I have the place sorted out. I'm 26 and been working for the last 8 and a half years so it will be one hell of a change for me.

bigjohn92 where are you going to study?

                    Re: OOCL Anyone?

Andy S, I had exactly the same "oh oh have I done the right thing, right company etc" moment myself, but dont worry you will have.

I had some contact with the guy that wrote that blog, and he sent me his diary, photos, emails on his experiences and all in all he said it was a good company and would be a good career if thats what you wanted, he just didnt like the lonliness of being away thats all.

As I said I will have more info to post up when i go to sea, as on the OOCL side I dhavent had that much interaction with them. And heard only good things about Warsash mate.

Haha Flyboy, GCNS being an experience...well just say you might have to alot of self studying along with self teaching as lectures really vary in their abilities to teach etc. Im not going to slag it to the point of trying to put you off but possibly enquire about the other college options before definately signing to GCNS, and just bare in mind that you have to get stuck into the work right from te start and possibly more than you should actually have to.

Cool. I guess there really isn't any way to know for 100% sure that it's for you until you go to sea. I feel that I will be ok but you just never know. I'm sure it's a case of you never know until you have sampled the goods as it were.

I'm sure OOCL will be good as long as the atmosphere on board is good. I hope it will be professional but friendly.

                          Re: OOCL Anyone?

Hey I have absolutely no problem doing self-study. I'm just about to complete my degree, and most of the work is self-guided. Plus I've had plenty of experience with lecturers who shouldn't be allowed to teach. Anyway, the only choice available to me other than GCNS is banff and buchan. So I'm pretty happy with GCNS.

I'm 26, with study and work behind me and have no problem with self study either flyboy, and its probably a good thing you have some studying experience behind you to. You will see what I mean when you get there.

The course is good, interesting and full on and you will make some good friends, just the college and only some lecturers that are a bit unorganised tbh. You will enjoy it.

John, what facebook site?? OOCL have one?

So is that 3 OOCL cadets here at least then, good stuff

Hope you guys all enjoy it when you start.
