  • Already have a degree

hey, im new here, but im currently applying for every company I can find to try and get on a cadetship for next year.

only problem I've had so far is when I walked down to a local shipping company and they told me they wouldn't accept me because I have a degree. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this? or if anyone is on here that has been accepted and already has a degree?

my degree isn't related, and was a massive waste of time. I'll be pretty gutted if it stops me getting on with any companies

    any advice would be welcomed!

    thanks guys.

I'd have thought a degree would have been more preferred as it shows a higher level of being able to understand and process information (allegedly )

I'd like to say hallo and welcome but I've not been here long myself.

hello, well welcome to you as well if you havent been here long!

the place near me said it was something to do with funding, they dont get the government training grant because ive already got a degree, if thats the case for everyone I cant see anyone even considering me

but they did say I might be ok for the foundation degree courses and should go to the open day at STC in February, im hoping theres someone on here who has been in this situation, help is definitely needed

Hi and welcome to OC drummeruk. I must admit this doesn’t sound particularly familiar to me (but then again what do I know!); did you manage to speak to a recruitment officer at the company in question?

I have it on good authority that there are going to be some changes to the SMarT funding arrangements from September 2012; from your above post it seems like this may have something to do with ELQs?

I thought the changes were going to be you'd get funding to your first ticket, but everything after that would be funded by you/your company. Or is that the case now?

Hi Ducki52, I do believe that to be the case now but it would seem that this is a temporary revision until a full review of the scheme is completed. Please see http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mgn_431.pdf for more information.

I hope that already having a degree isn't going to turn out to be an issue for September 2012 starts onwards, if it is... well..... I have a big problem! ... I'm sure it'll all be fine.... (hope)

Nowt in that that says you can't get funding if you've got a degree....

You’re absolutely right GuinnessMan and I would certainly encourage people to apply for September 2012 regardless of potential changes to the SMarT funding scheme.

I think it would be reasonable to assume that there will be a real terms cut in the amount of money made available through the SMarT scheme in 2012/13; how that will affect aspiring cadets remains to be seen.

What I read in that document is that SMarT funding for this current financial year will be to those training for their first CoC only, with any funds left over given to those who would have been eligible for the SMarT 2, and the impression I get for the SMarT funding for financial year 12/13 will simply be to having nothing left over, which satisfies the governments demand for cuts but doesn't actually harm the training of 1st CoCs.

But, we can speculate till the cows come home and the gubmint will do something spectacularly different.

There are hoards of cadets with degrees, and even more that have dropped out of one! You are eligable for funding and there is no reason at all to stop you from applying and starting a wonderful, new career.

Give SSTG a call and they will give you some no nonsense advice and some pointers.

There are training routes specifically designed for those with a relevant degree (i.e. an engineering or nautical science degree) so it shouldn't be an issue, where you may stumble into problems is if you have received funding from the government for a sociology degree then a company may not be able to get further funding for you as a cadet.
