  • Carnival UK Application

hi guys, I'd just like to explain my situation and hopefully get some feedback from members here.

I applied for and engine cadetship carnival early this year and i am now at the point where I've been invited for an assessment day a few months ago. Since then I've had a back n fourth email chat with thier recruitment team and the dates were supposed to be the end of october( i think the deck applicants had thiers about this time) and carnival told me they were running late and looking to arrange more assessment days soon. that last email was on the 17th of october. My current place of work are now pressuring me to take my end of the year holidays (which I saved espically for this assessment day) and without annoying carnival with another email asking the same question for about the 4th time I was hoping someone on here could tell me any more information or give me advice as to what to do next, thanks .

Keep bugging them! Call them and get a straight answer on Monday morning, if you're been chatting to them via email you should have a phone number on the bottom of at least one, use that and ask for the person you've been talking to by name.

Unfortunatly I don't actually have a number to call. I've been conversing with "the cadet team"

However I think ive got a business card for their hr manager [snip], should maybe give that a try?

If anyone can provide a more suitable number to be phone I'd appreciate it alot.

        Hi scotty,

Carnival get a lot of applicants so patience is required, however given your situation I'd recommend another email explaining your holidays situation. I'm sure they would completely understand. If you have a business card, then you have it because that person is happy to be contacted, so you may want to use those details too.

        Best of luck!

Good to hear, bit more time to prepare anyway and not too far away. There's an official FB page now at http://www.facebook.com/editprofile....e/365867476773

Are you putting in other applications too? Always good to have a spread!

Not that I'm biased or anything...but I would give Princess Cruises a try as well. They are run almost identically, the ships are essentially the same and the training is almost identical. Also, there are more ships so you have the positives (and negatives) of working within a larger fleet. There doesn't appear to be a website for recruitment (when I applied it was for Carnival UK) but there is this: http://www.princess.com/downloads/pd...ogram_2010.pdf with contact details at the end. My experiences with the company have been 99% good, the negatives throughout my cadetship were mainly issues with the college...

                  Best of luck

TheMachine's quite right - it's essentially the same company, just with different manning arrangements. Our fleet regulations are pretty much identical and we swap ships like nobody's business.

As an engineering cadet i would recommend you start with a cargo ship company. A lot of the training on board cruise ships is sub par compared to what you get on cruise ships purely due to the amount of maintenance work done.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss Cruise Ships as an engineering cadet. I'm with Carnival UK and am an engineering cadet, and having got back from our first sea phase myself and the other cadets on my course compared our TRB's. Alot of my coursemates who work tankers and cargo havent got nearly as much covered as I have, and have told me that the standard of training they had on board was shocking. Some stories of being told to just go to their cabin and someone will find them if they're needed. Some stories of having an arguement with the Chief engineer when they brought up that they're not learning anything.

Im not saying all cargo or tankers or offshore is like this, but its certainly misleading to say that the standard of training on Cruise Ships is sub par. I managed to complete a large portion of my TRB, as well as complete my CPRSC course while I was on board! My other coursemates who work for Princess have had similar experiences, and have not only been able to complete large portions of the TRB in their first sea phase, but we have also been able to earn the respect of the senior officers to be placed in a position of actual responsibilty during a watch.

As GDOutlaw says I wouldn't dismiss cruise ships so readily.

I don't think that one is better than the other in general, it depends on what ships you're on, who you work with and what opportunities you get.

It may be the case you get more done on a cruise ship with a majority of British crew than on a container ship crewed mainly by russians. It's not that you don't have the opportunities, it may just be you're not comfortable or not sure of yourself in that situation.

                            To boldly go.....

I've trained cadets on cruise ships and due to the fact that nothing really happens on them and the maintenance is split over a department of 70+ people its hard to get good on the job experience. I also believe that a lot of cadets, not all, get distracted very easily buy the luxuries on there.

Plus the TRB is a paperwork exercise. I have seen tasks signed off when only a 'good enough' response was given. It does not give a good representation of knowledge. This is why FD cadets get a bad rep when they come in waving qualifications.
