What Grades Do I Need

Hi


I was just wondering what grades it takes to get a cadetship with one of the cruise ship companies , becuase on the application forms it says you only need 120-160 UCAS points which seems quite low? This was because i was considering if to resit to higer grades in januray for the septemeber 2012 intake.

That's because the 120-160 requirement is for the Foundation degree course, so it is exactly half that of the full degree. You can do a BSc/BEng in Marine Operations/Marine Engineering with around 240-260UCAS points at Plymouth and Liverpool universities.

If you want to do the HND, which is probably the most common course, you need average-high grade passes at standard/GCSE level, with Physics/Maths/English included.

If you want entry onto the degrees, you need a higher/A-level pass in Physics (grade D+)

I was going to drop physics at AS level standard which i got a D at but carry on with maths which i got a C at at AS Level and predicted a C for at A2 would that be enough ??

Requirements vary between companies so it's best to check with the companies themselves. Remember that the course is essentially a maths course - maths plays a part in navigation, stability, cargo work and even maintenance to a degree. There's also a degree of physics involved so companies will look favourably on good maths and physics results.

You'd be able to do the HND if you have good GCSEs, not sure about the foundation degree, you could probably do it if you get the amount of UCAS points. That's because you got a pass in physics at AS, and are looking to do well in maths A2.

So you'd be able to do the HND for sure, if you carry on at your C maths standard and get 120+UCAS, you'd be able to do the foundation degree and maybe even bachelors degree

Ok, those requirements are the minimum that they want you to have. There is a lot of competition to get into a cruise ship company so the higher the grades the more likely you are to get in with a cruise company. Plus having a few good after-school activities, charity work, etc will probably help with that. Show that you do more than just sit around and study.

Also, don't pin all your hopes on getting in with a cruise company. There are lots of other types of ships out there, some more higher paying than cruise and all with their own unique differences and challenges.

I mentioned that in a PM to the OP, GM (wow, lots of abbreviations). Never get hung up on cruise ships - if you get through your cadetship and still want to work on cruise ships you'll be able to.
