  • 5th of September (The Big One)

    Hey guys,
Not long now till we all start our training? I have to say its beginning to sink in with me and i would be lying if i said i was not slightly nervous!! Ive found out ill be sponsored by GulfMark which is a relief as they were one of my choices. A bit apprehensive about the maths as it has been a while since ive left school and was never a strong point!! Doing some revision on trigonometry and geometry at the moment!!

Have any of you heard about your sponsors? How are you all feeling about starting? Look forward to meeting you all and getting this show on the road

I know my company as well I applied direct, I said over on a college topic bit about starting I think everyone is a tad nervous about starting big change and all that I am looking forward to meeting everyone at my college to the small advantage from the recent induction we had I will know a couple faces around the place but as for it sinking in I would say everyone is at different stages, I know it still isn't real in my head it will take getting down there, and starting for it to hit home I think.

It's a big change and there'd probably be something wrong with you if you weren't nervous!

Parts of the course will be challenging, but as long as you're up for the challenge you'll be fine!

As I say to anyone just before they start, you are going to love the next 3 years! The first phase will blow through quickly and you'll soon be on a ship finding out what this industry is all about.

        Have fun!
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

It is a big change and as has been said that will create nerves, there will also be tough bits, subjects that you dont think you will ever grasp or time on a ship that makes you long for home. But any job has those too and its important to resist the temptation to just give up.
Theres always people who will help you get through the bad bits, from just giving you someone to rant at to helping with those difficult questions

Enjoy it and enjoy the experiences that pop up along the way
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky

Oh, and if you need help throughout the course, then by all means give one of us a shout and we'll do our best to help out or point you in the right direction. No such thing as a stupid question...

I can't wait to start, I'm just worried if I end up with a company I'm not keen on, due to what I've heard off other current cadets and who my dad and his colleagues have worked for.

Well, when you find out who your sponsor is then let us know and we can tell you about them. Most of the stuff we come out with about different companies are normally just jokes. They are normally alright for the most part...

It's not really from what I've heard on here, always take anything on the internet with a pinch of salt.

I know about most of the companies I could end up with, only worried if I was to be put with 2/3 certain ones. I've not applied for any cruise ships in my top 3 so hopefully that will help with getting one of my top 3(Chevron, Knutsen and Dole).

There may well be no such thing as a stupid question....the answers on the other hand we cant guarantee there stupidity-free-ness

Just to add....it is a big change and good luck to all BUT

Should you find yourself not likeing it and after talking to people and the company and IF you still arent happy then walk away....there is nothing wrong with it, it's a life style and you could be doing it for quite some time so you got to be happy, better to find out sooner and bail than be in doing somthing you hate and arent that arsed about. No one will think any the less of you for having tried it and deciding it is not for you.

I'm not excited or nervous yet, I was expecting to be waiting until at least January and now I'm off in just over 2 weeks! More worried about how I'm gonna get everythin sorted in time!

This forum seems like a good place for genuine info so I'll certainly be hanging about!

Do any phase 3/5/7 cadets know roughly how much they spent in the first month?
I start in a couple of weeks and dont get paid until the end of september.
Any rough guide will be very kind.
                        Thanks Sam

I get excited then 2 seconds later really nervous. it's just coming up soo quickly and compared to my currently easy lazy Lifestyle of sitting with mates playing xbox and watching movies all day its going to be a MASSIVE change.

                          also still no sponsoring company

I'd say I'm anxious to get there and get started, still won't seem like it's really happening until I get there and start unpacking my things I imagine. Though I'm not starting on the 5th, I'm starting on the 25th (Fleetwood) so I'll have even longer to wait. Still, I guess I can read up on 5th starters experiences to prepare me whilst I wait.
