  • What do I need to do before applying?

    Hello all,
I want to apply for the Jan 2012 places as soon as, so which tests do I need to undertake before filling the application forms,
(For SSTG one of the sections in the application is as follows)

If held, enter details (including the number and issue and expiry dates, as appropriate) of your:
Passport: Got it MN Medical: ? MN Discharge Book: ? MN Sight Test: ?

Please guide me in the right direction and if you could tell me what I need from above or else to go with the application that'll be great.
Do I need to call the local Marine Office and order an eyesight form to take to the local optician? Is this form ENG1 or MSF4100 form, can I print it from somewhere?
Do I need this discharge book?
Do I need to get a medical done as well from the approved doctors or is that till later?

Thank you for your time, Cheers!

You just need to apply, the company or charity in SSTG's case will help you with what you need to apply for and get.

It says as appropraite, so you only need to fill in the bits you already have.

        Before applying?
Research mate, that's the only thing you need to do, so as to make sure that you apply to the "right" company! ie. right for you!
Other than that, niente Once you are accepted you will be asked to sort all those things out by your company which in the most cases
will pay for eg. medicals aso..

Thank you very much guys, it really helped a lot. Anyways, I've applied to SSTG for Jan 2012 but the only thing was that in their additional information section online it said "about 250 words" but I exceeded to about 355 or maybe a bit more. Does it matter that much because on their website "how to make a successful application guide" it states that personal statement should be 500 words max. I just hope that they at least consider my application.

That should be ok I guess as long as it isn't you repeating youself over and over they just don't want 500-1000 words as well think how many applications they get and how long it would take to read each one with that amount on they don't want life stories me thinks haha so you should be ok
Be what you want to be not what other people tell you to be
            Adapt and over come

              Hi,

I wrote a bit more on my application like you did. SSTG interviewed me and offered me sponsorship, so no, I don't think going over will affect you too much . Writing a bit more shows that you're dedicated, and like stronglead said, as long as you weren't repeating yourself and you have offered up information which will 'interest' them with regards to your personality/sea going career, they will probably take more interest in your application than someone who has written under the 250 words

              Good luck!!

It's the quality of the statement that they will look at not the length, as long as you haven't written a novel you should be fine.

                  Cheers guys,
Anyways as stupid as it may sound but because I filled the form at night time I was really tired and I made a terrible mistake......In the height section I had to use the
chart to convert from feet to cm but instead of putting (I'm about 5'8 =176 cm) I put 186............Stupid me ...It's done my head in..maybe if they select me I could explain then eh....OH Man! But at least there's something to be learnt ...never to forms when you're tired.

Dont worry about that, when I sent my applications away, they had my old school address and I spelt my teachers name wrong, and it was all fine and I wasnt even tired...

Don't worry, as long as you come across well and meet their requirements you should be fine!
