  • Do I need all this uniform?

So I got a load of info in the post today from SSTG about starting training, reading through there is stuff for my discharge book and all sorts, then at the back it had a list of my uniform I need, it looks like I need the full dress uniform white cap and the lot, which I can't wait to get . However, does anyone know if I need to get this before I start college or can I wait till closer to joining my first ship? The company I'm with is CMA CGM and I'm going to Plymouth Uni.

Uniform seems to be quite a college specific thing - although it is very unlikely you will need any dress uniform. The usual NATO jumper, pilot shirts, tie, black trousers etc should
    suffice.

Give Plymouth a ring and ask them.

Plymouth is a uni so you don't need a uniform, that's what I was told by SSTG in my interview.

In that case I think you have probably answered your own question!

I think alot of cadets (generally non cruise types) won't need the dress uniform until they pass out at the end of training (someone correct me if I am wrong). Otherwise it sounds like you won't need uniform until you head to sea. It would probably be best to check with your sponsor though.

Yes I would be surprised if you need uniform at Plymouth Uni, check with the college, what course does Plymouth Uni now do?

I believe Plymouth is all FD courses now with the option to top up.

Certainly is a lot of dosh when one adds up the kit list provided by WMA together with two suppliers details and price list.

My Sponsor (Cargo) say the following. They provide boiler suit and a company tie, they only require the bare minimum for a uniform whilst at college as there is no requirement for any on board the vessels and the bare minimum is the white shirt (with epaulettes), tie, black trousers and black shoes.

Will also require black safety boots for courses and on board the vessel.

Any input/comments on this welcome.. Cheers

My sponsor doesn't issue formal uniform for on board either, I can see their logic in that; the ships being cargo.

I got 2 long and 3 short, not a great fan of long but in the winter I get rather cold.

Of course, strictly speaking, wearing a short sleeve shirt with a tie is a fashion faux pas!

No as cringe worthy as white socks and black trousers

Thanks Ship Mates, from the response it would appear that Faux Pas or Not, nothing is cast in stone A la R.N...So to hazard a guess I won't go far wrong open neck with short sleeve and Tie with long?..We are talking slide on Eps' rather than boards? ?6.00 plus VAT @ Miller Raynor Southampton. They also advise that there are Pilot Shirts starting from ?6.00 up to ?11.00 depending on material quality,,,Any input as always appreciated.

                            Cheers!

I got my shirts and NATO jumper from Miller Rayner and I'm glad I did. The shirts are good quality and feel comfortable on, which I think is important considering I'll be wearing them day in day out. I also got the all wool v-neck, personally I think the wool one looks better.
