  • Holiday

Hey, just a general question about sea time next year! How long to Maersk deck cadets normally get? And also there's this major family holiday planned for next year in August, what are the chances I'll be able to go? Can you request certain weeks off or is that cheeky?

    Thanks

You'll be lucky, I managed to swing a couple of weeks leave this summer for my sisters wedding, for which I gave over a years notice. But I doubt that a holiday would be a good enough reason to grant leave. You may find yourself free over that time anyway but just remember that the shoreside training officers are trying to juggle many cadets and ships and you just have to fit in when they can fit you in.

So do you think I should e-mail someone and ask? Or just have to take my chances?

It should be ok. The office did send mail out explaining that it wasn't acceptable to book holidays while on a sea phase, but if you e-mail the office well in advance......... i've seen other people extending or cutting trips short for a holiday

I would ask, or inform them or your request, no harm, if it's in august it might be doable as you should have done a good dollops of sea time at that point, but ask if nothing else it is polite and they are you employer (sort of!)

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

If its your first sea phase you should be going back to college start of september, so having to take the end of august off isnt going to be too inconvienent it would be much worse if you wanted the start of july off which would then fall in the middle of a trip. While you are there to work and certainly Clyde suggest that you take any holidays during the college ones that measn that you might only be getting christmas off each year. I asked for a holiday for the end of august this year to make sure i was home for a major birthday and the company has agreed.

Email them and ask, they will have a policy on it and will tell you wether its possible or not
you can take it with a pinch of salt, but i prefer it with a nip of whisky
