  • Following on from Ancient Mariners post

I was wondering if anyone knows roughly how many deck cadets go on the get employment in the MN, I understand that most companies don't guarantee a place but do most find something?

And is there a company that is particularly well known for keeping their cadets when qualified?

Yes "most" do find a job and to be fair most do with their original sponsor BUT it isnt written in stone.......there are a few notable exceptions who have recently had to let people go.......but that isnt the norm and you will find a job......really you will

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

You will be fine (in most cases) you may not be with your sponsor but you will be ok...remember the bigger picture here...........ticket (certification) is the point everything else is "nice"

yeh you'll be fine. I was out in the cold with my sponsor company. Fortuneately id heard it on the grapevine 2 weeks before being told and had found another job without passing my ticket. Then within two weeks of passingi was away as a qualifed engineer

There definately is an officer shortage, and a lot of vacancies in the industry. You lose people pretty quickly to shoreside jobs, working in insurance claims, VTS or surveying. When I finished my cadetship the P&I Club were poaching cadets at graduation day.
There is quite a lot of work, but sometimes you have to take a lower paid ****ty job initially to get the first trip as OOW under your belt.
