Re: What one piece of advice would you pass on?
Got some from a friend not had a chance to try it yet as I haven't been on my first trip yet. He said before joining a ship to take ?20 go to the news agents buy a selection of newspapers and magazines.
A, it will give you something to do on your no doubt long travel connections before joining your ship
B, more importantly your crew mates will appreciate the taste of home, reading meterial and the fact you made an effort might make them more willing to help you out when you need it.
Not tried it yet but sounds like good advice to me

Be affable! If people like you and your keen, then you'll be absolutely fine. What you did before your cadetship, what qualifications you have and what you know isn't very important as a cadet, but if people like you and you try hard and listen you'll have a very smooth and successful cadetship.

Remember you don't know "everything" yet.
So if in doubt ASK,
if you don't know ASK,
if you aren't sure or didn't quite understand the instruction or request ASK
Oh and bring the papers / Heat / Zoo etc as mentioned before Suez is a mighty boring transitTrust me I'm a Chief.

Turn up on time, have a shave, clean your teeth and dont smell of curry / garlicWear a suit (or similar) it is to all intents and purposes THE job interview from hell
Without his says so all bets are off.
Remember you only have (aprox) 1 hour to show the examiner you are competent and capable and he dosen't know you from Adam (or Eve), he is looking at you from the point of view, can he sleep safe in his bed knowing you are on watch / duty (assuming he was on ship with you).
DO NOT argue with the examiner
Answer the question ASKED not the one you wish he asked, if you dont understand the question say so he ought to re-phrase it or maybe leave it alone completely
Be polite, he is a Sir unless otherwise told
Read up on the latest MGN's and the likes
Oh and good luckTrust me I'm a Chief.

Re: What one piece of advice would you pass on?
Lol! Cheers Cheify. Have already got my suit =]
Lots of people have said the OOW orals are the easiest, the only reason people get worked up about them is because you don't know what to expect. That's not to say you should do your best to know what you should. It's still easy to fail if you don't know your stuff
To boldly go.....
