  • LNG/LPG questions

Hi I have just a few questions about LNG/LPG carrier questions:

    1) Is it true the pay on these carriers is very high? I heard like double of something like cargo? Does anyone know roughly how much pay a 3rd officer would recieve?

    2) How hard is it to get on these ships? What experience is required? (I will be training with a cargo company)

    thanks

    Re: LNG/LPG questions

Pay is high, not sure as much as double........though I dont actually know what you mean by "cargo" everything carried by a ship is cargo, just some of it is "self loading and discharging cargo" (passengers ) Tankers are cargo as are containers so a little vague there

Get with a company that has these and ask to go on them, get your tankerfam(LNG) and away you go, no harder than any other type of ship.....though why anyone would want to go on these is beyond me.....some of the "stuff" carried is more dangerous than the contents of a teenagers washing basket, involving annual medicals, regular blood tests and the likes

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Huh? How is it the wrong industry for high pay? Loads of people told me it's good pay and it's tax free. Why would anyone be in this industry then if the pay isn't good as there would be no other benefits that I can think of. And what industry would you recommend for good pay then?

Just an observation but no matter which part of the industry you pitch up in you will earn considerably more than your current home based peer group if only by dint of being tax free.

Yes we are tax free, however the big buck jobs are not as common as people say, Yachts are good payers, Tankers in general pay well regardless of commodity, any specialists are well paid too, like DP operators and the likes.

                Lol

It isnt a bad thing to want the most you can earn BUT it shouldnt be the ONLY reason for coming to sea, it really really really is as much a life style choice as just a job. I know that might sound old fashioned and the likes. But long periods away from home, family and friends coupled with all the traveling etc means you need to be pretty certain you want the job, then look for the best wages, BUT there is more to it than just best payer, it's as much about the total package, the ships, the getting good food, good back up from office etc, pension blah blah blah not just the headline ????.

So I do encourage you (or anyone to come to sea, BUT be sure in your own mind why it is you are coming etc thats all

Other benifits include getting paid to travel to other parts of the world and not being a wage slave working 9 to 5 in an office. If your only incentive is for good pay I don't think you will last in the Merchant Navy.

                    Re: LNG/LPG questions

Well the reason im joining is because my neighbour works for CMA CGM and he worked he way up to captain but now he's shore based, anyway because i wasn't doing anything at the time (last january) he told me about the MN and recommended i join so i thought why not i haven't got anything to lose. He got me my interviews and i passed them just waiting to start in september now. He told me its great pay and you get to see the world for free so it sounds good to me, whatever i would of done i would of done it for money thats what is important in any career.

Have you considered that any high-paying or appealing job is going to attract more applicants than others? ...and that it then becomes a matter of who is the most interesting or appealing to the interviewers, based on what *other* reasons they might have for wanting to join - not to mention, what they might bring over other applicants.

I know people with very well paid jobs but they hate going to work every day, honestly all the money it the world won't compensate for being miserable.

I'm with a gas/oil company, and yes officers are fairly well paid on board......but the REASON they are well paid as it is such a critical and safety concious environment.....if your counting your pennies instead of paying attention to the job your meant to be doing then LNG won't be for you, you'll hurt someone.

.......I think an officer on a super yacht would be more suited to your needs.

I agree with you. Although one thing I have to point out is that there arn't that many Super Yachts knocking around, it's a very tight nit group that is difficult to get into and if you're ever fed up with it and want to go back to proper ships then it's rather tricky as most companies don't view yacht officer's very highly.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....
