  • We are full time students?

    Hi all

I recently applied for my student finance for September via fleetwood marine engineering....and the college responded to the student finance folk saying the course was part-time...

AFter ringing up the college and asking them whether this was true, I was told no...and even the course tutor agreed in writing to the reception.

So now I am in this big mess of getting answers from the maritime campus about what is what.

Surley we are full time students though? the hours put in a week during college is more than what uni students could manage in 3!

Anyone else been in this situation?

I don't believe the cadetship qualifies for student finance, but I really wouldn't concern yourself with it. The allowance plus accommodation paid for and everything else means you really won't have to worry about finances (unless you plan on spending a rediculous amount of money).

Oh, and nice to see another Fleetwood Engy to start in Sept, hopefully I'll be there too (medical willing that is).

well the rules are very vague...when talking to the student finance folk they only really cared whether the course was full or part time, I only stress because I have a car to run and such. I know someone who has applied for student finance on a one day a week course, and he works the other 4....

Yup I will be there, passed medical so not much can pull me back now...

Seems there is confliction internally and externally. Ah well, if I sort this out I can at least pass on the word so everyone else is in the know...

Correct me if I am wrong....deck cadets spend MORE time at sea? perhaps this is why they would be part time?

As far as student loans are concerned you are in full time education and the college will support loan applications. Most guys at my college all have loans.

The time you spend at sea is likened to a "placement" in other university courses. I have never come across any problems in applying for student loans.

incorrect, except for HND students who are HNC students for the first part of their training, and thus are not eligible.

incorrect. -> don't tick those boxes asking whether you will spend time studying abroad... you are F/T home student, sponsored, just like a military sponsored student for example.

there is detailed info on the forum, please have a search and let us know if you can't find it

Re: We are full time students?

rang the college back and they said their automated system is faulty and will soon get fixed, if anyone is applying to the same course I suggest checking your application

Re: We are full time students?

Should be, until I have resolved the issue with the college I shouldn't bother applying just yet.
alot of people have sudent finance disregarding the fact we get a salary and are at sea.

Anyway I am calling them again tomorrow to get it all done so I will keep this updated.

                      It's not a salary, it's an allowance.

search the site for the directgov links in earlier threads.

Tbh, I'm not going to bother applying for finance. Allowance and having accom/food paid for should be more than enough for me, I'm not a big spender by any means

                          Hold on a minute!

Yeah I'm not a big spender either and the money will be enough, but.. I think a student loan is a very good way to borrow money.

People used to say that even if you don't need your student loan, take it and put it in a savings account. That way you'd earn more than the loan would cost you.

"One consequence of tarring all debt with the 'boo hiss' brush is that when students borrow, many don't delineate between the best type of borrowing - student loans - and the rest, leaving them mired in bad debts. This means they start their working life damaged by financial problems and already swept into the debt culture. So let's start by saying: All debts are not the same! Some types of debt are MUCH better than others."

                          So, with the student loan..

"You can make money from it.

This is very cheap debt; in fact it's so cheap, if you were to borrow it and save it in a Top Savings Account, as these pay more interest than the loan costs, you'd make a profit.

Importantly it means that as the loan is making you money, there's no problem holding on to it, so you're effectively keeping the facility open for cheap borrowing after graduation if you need it"

-edit- That is if you're sensible with money. If having that money means you're very tempted to spend it all on impulse, then that doesn't work out so well.

not sure if this will still work student loan interest rates are based on inflation. Bank rates are not with inflation being so high might end up costing you more than the intrest you earn on bank account.

RPI is currently 5.5% so to make money you need a bank account that has a higher interest rate than this.
