  • How does SSTG work?

I am just starting to research the mn and like the sound of SSTG but not really sure what the benefits are over contacting a sponsoring company direct. Also if I want to start Sept 2012 when should I apply?

    Re: How does SSTG work?

SSTG Is a recruitment company for a group of shipping companies every company have there own way of doing things ie colleges training ships etc etc. As for advantages over going to a company direct well im not sure to be quite honest although im sure one of the many sstg cadets on here will tell you lots

As for applying for sept 2012 you could apply now but its well really to early I would start OCT-NOV 2011 for that intake and even then your in nice and early.

          Re: How does SSTG work?

I haven't started my course but i applied to SSTG for several reasons, one of which was that it has a very friendly and supportive atmosphere, something that may not be quite the same if going directly to a company. They also have a wide range of companies that they represent, so you should have quite a nice range of choice in what kind of ship you would train on and company you want sponsoring you. Coupled with the generous allowance and dedicated training officers who help you throughout the training, SSTG is a safe bet as far as I can say. Best I can say is apply, the worst that can happen is you don't like them and choose not to go with them but at least you will have had a choice in the matter.

Bear in mind, this is just one person's opinion, try searching SSTG in the search bar and see what other people say. The more opinions you can gather, the more informed the choice you make will be. If you have any more questions, post em up and we'll try to answer them

            Re: How does SSTG work?

I work for OOCL / Hamburg Sud and Im looked after for via SSTG , the way it works is rather than a company having a department for cadets they ask SSTG (who are a charity ) to do this for them . They then get the applicants interview them ask them who they want employment with , if the sponsor company accepts then you will require a second interview with the company . If they like you , then you will be offered sponsorship . and be sent to one of the many colleges . SSTG will then look after your training providing uniform , allowances etc travel ship dates .

So far SSTG have been exceptional and are also very generous with salaries and travel expenses
            Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why

This is great info thanks guys. I did try to search SSTG but it said it wasn't enough letters or something.
Have been reading loads of threads tho and haven't found a bad word said about them.

                Re: How does SSTG work?

i.ve just accepted a place with oocl through them, from what i know not many people have a bad thing to say about them. They were extremely efficient and processing my application, as i got an interview date 2 days after i sent it in. They are really helpful with all your questions and queries and from what i.ve experienced they are very honest and give you all the details you could possibly need.

                  Re: How does SSTG work?

There is only one real disadvantage of SSTG in so far as they are a pretty small and highly pressured unit. Up until now, however, I have had no problems with getting in contact with my training manager, responses are always polite and constructive and they actually seem to do what they promise from the outset.
If you want to apply, I would get in there as soon as possible as spaces are going like hotcakes.
If you read this forum, most people will agree that SSTG are a good choice, whilst CMT are a pretty mediocre fall back option (in terms of agys). Viking are a totally different kettle of fish, they are almost totally specialised and focussed on the customer service market of the industry and to be fair they have a pretty good reputation amongst us snotties.

                  Hope this helps?

                    Re: How does SSTG work?

Helps a lot steamer, but I have to ask, what's a snottie? I am aiming for Sept 2012 intake and they have suggested I apply Sept 2011. It is really good to hear of an organisation that actually does what it says on the tin.

Does anyone know how many cadets they take on each year?

                      Re: How does SSTG work?

A snottie is what you want to become! Back in ye days of old, midshipmen (RN equiv of a cadet) used to have buttons sewn on their cuffs to stop them from wiping their noses on their uniform...hence the name snotty...

I wouldn't worry about it-that's what your cadetship is for!
