  • How typical is this?

I read this cadets blog from a link posted here recently. He is on containers like I would probably go for.
I was really wondering how typical what he writes about is, or is he just on a bad ship?
I'm refering to these two pages mainly and how he describes the atmosphere and crew on board.

    http://musingsfromtheblue.blogspot.com/ ... ocean.html (mainly 6th paragraph)

and some bits on here http://musingsfromtheblue.blogspot.com/ ... -life.html

It seems to me that if this is how it really is then it's not exactly the best working environment.

PS - If the guy who wrote it is on here I find your blog interesting and a bit of an eye opener in a way.

    Its tlloyd1983's Blog.
I wouldn't get worried abut it i think he is just speaking his mind. Although that is similar to what i have heard about it as well its all talk(or if i'm reading the wrong paragraph its just one place). but its probably best to wait for somebody who has been to sea to say, i wouldn't worry about it though.

I agree about the interesting bit its an enjoyable blog.

No man would go to sea if skilled enough to get himslef into prison, for a jail has more room , more honest company , and you are somewhat less likley to drown ( Dr. Samuel Johnson)

Paragraphs 6 and 7 I guess. It's the bit where he was basically saying the crew slag each other off behind their backs. I'm not too keen on that kind of thing to be honest.

When you live in each others pockets, some politics is going to occur. The larger the crew, the greater the politics

Not like you can go home and talk to "mates" or parents, which is what most people do in normal jobs, so having a good whine amongst each other is pretty normal and can be healthy, it depends upon what happens next. If people arent getting on then it's bad, if everyone just gets on with what they have to do and the likes, then no harm done.

Engineers are always grease monkeys, blige rats, ginger beers etc and the Deck team are bridge ornaments, windows watchers and window lickers....... there I said it

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Or rock dodgers. Thats all they do lol

Yeh there may be some slagging off on ships but in a confined space with not so many people and different cultures it's going to happen. In my experience filipinos and indians...do NOT get on lol

But does it make the atmosphere on board bad or do people generally still get along and have a good time? I think it could be quite an unpleasant 3-4 months if everyone was bitching and the atmosphere was one of tension all the time.

Having not been to sea it's hard to know if I'm reading too much into the negatives of the job.

yes think you are over thinking it a tad, normally there maybe periods of grumpiness, but tends to work it self out normally. Most of us tend (naturally) look on the downside.... just watch "watchdog" or any soap :-)

Even in a 'typical' office work environment people still slag each other off behind thier backs, office politics and all that stuff. Just human nature I guess.
