  • Money!

    Right, the big question.

Sponsorship payments are generally quite generous, but is there any other funding available from elsewhere? For example, the traditional student maintenence loan, grants, bursaries etc?

      Re: Money!

The cadetship earning program is largely geared to earning majority of cash at sea.

Once you get to college you will have to buy equipment, food, drink and generally stuff you need to live (including the pub).

If you pay for your own accommodation that's a real blow. At warsash it's around ?75-?100 a week, so you'll be looking at around ?900 for your average 4 month stay.

You practically pay for nothing at sea, unless you spend unreasonable time in the bar. In any case, all measures are double and with Coke at 40p a can and beer at 80p a bottle, you're laughing if you can spare a tenner.

SAVE YOUR MONEY AT SEA, then you'll have no cash problems at college thus avoiding a student loan.

If you end up at warsash you'll have to shell out ?50 a time to resit any exam you fail, and ?90 if it was an MCA exam. At some point, no matter how good you are, you'll have to pay to resit something.

Surely, you're exaggerating. You mean EVERYBODY has to go through a dreaded resit at some time? I would have thought it would have been a minority or at most a slight majority of cadets. That's a sobering thought.

LOL, maybe not everybody. Just the vast majority. It's nothing to be worried about, it doesn't hurt your cadetship and it's certainly not "dreaded." It would be hard to go through three years of cadetship, with around 9 exams each college phase, more towards the end, and never have to resit one.

For example, to date I've had to resit 2 exams, and I've been at Warsash since '08. There isn't one person I know who hasn't had to resit an exam at least once.

At the end of each term there is a resit week where you take any exams you missed the pass mark on.

I'm on HND course so I have to get 65% pass mark on everything to satisfy the MCA requirements.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but it's a lot easier to get noticed in the CV pile if you have As&Bs where every one else is C- or worse. Not all potential employers will look, but then not all employers are worth working for...

                Re: Money!

I hope I don't have to resit, in school I've only had to resit 2 maths NABs, that's all the resitting I've ever done.
I have a question, but it's not that big to start a topic on, the British Seaman's Identity Card, can you use that as ID to get into clubs etc? How cool would it be, to go up to a bouncer, and show him that for ID ;D

I'd be careful mentioning the phrase "British Seaman" in a noisy nightclub, young lady...

                      Re: Money!

Speaking of the seaman's card, for the Carnival people, are we expected to get one or is the discharge book all that's needed. I'm not allowed a card since I'm from Ireland-land.

                      EDIT:
Oh actually looks like I might be able to get one anyway - as long as I have right of abode, which I do.
                      EDIT AGAIN:
Oh wait, no application form says British citizen. Hmmmm.

"A discharge book is a continuous record of a seafarers service. It is the personal possesion of the seafarer. The British Seaman's Card is similar to a British Passport and is internationally accepted, allowing seafarers to land at foreign ports without having to obtain visas. The card is surrendered to Registry of Seamen and Shipping by the seafarer when he/she leaves seagoing employment. Guidance notes on qualifying criteria are attached to the application form."

If it says that the Seaman's card allows you to 'land at foreign ports without having to obtain visas', then why do we have to send away for a US Visa?
