Re: Salary
Remember to consider other factors such as leave ratios and trip lengths when comparing salaries. Better leave ratios can mean more money for less work. Consider also whether you are paid a salary through your leave, or only for the time spent actually on a ship. And then there are other benefits, such as courses and further tickets that the company will sponsor you for.
Don't assume you'll be a 3rd Mate/4th Engineer, some companies start you on a lower rung as 4th Mate or whatever (Maersk? Holland America?), whilst with others you are a 2nd Mate straight away.
Swings and roundabouts.

Re: Salary
Indeed i must complete an extra 8months as a junior before i can become a fourth .
we only get paid when on ship when we qualify but the amount equates to previously listed amount
, although we also get some sort of leave pay but i dont know how much it is , it's certainly not Full pay.
Leave ratio as a junior and fourth is 4 on 3 off which is about the norm
Career progrestion is good although it has to be worked for with my outfit MCA minimum doubledMaybe I will never be

Re: Salary
My wageslip says I'm a 2/E despite still being green behind the ears(company eccentricity means everyone except chief is a 2/E; I have asked why but have received no sensible answer); shame the wage itself says quite clearly that I'm strictly a junior spanner twirler(Brimbo must be reading my wageslips; I get between ?21-?30k too!)

Trust me I'm a Chief.
Views expressed by me are mine and mine alone.
Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Re: Salary
Honestly, I think being with a company that you enjoy being with, and that you feel treat you well, and that you feel are good to deal with, and take you where you want to go (in terms of career as well as anything else) is more important than your rank or pay. I realise good pay is part of feeling like you are valued, but as Steve alludes to, the "conditions" half of "pay and conditions", can be more important for morale.Emeritus Admin & Founding Member
