Posts Responsible to (and Level):
Master, Chief Engineer and Marine Engineering Manager
Job Purpose:
For the assigned research vessel:-
? To maintain all of the electrical and electronic equipment on board the vessel, including the navigational and communications equipment, in a satisfactory manner and to participate in the planning and execution of all electrical / electronic planned maintenance routines and repairs.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities:
? To work to the requirements of, and reporting to, the Chief Engineer Officer, undertaking the following tasks and any other that the Chief Engineer Officer, Master or Marine Engineering Manager requires for the safety and / or good operation of the vessel.
? To maintain, using the vessel?s Planned Maintenance software, and diagnose electrical faults as well as completing necessary remedial action on all electrical equipment. Comprehensive records of completed work should be kept up to date by using this software. The equipment includes, but is not limited to:-
o Main and Auxiliary Switchboards, Distribution and Generating equipment
o Emergency Power Switchboards, Distribution and generating equipment.
o Main Propulsion Motors and Alternators
o Machinery Alarm and Power Management Systems
o Auxiliary E-motors, lighting and electric equipment in all machinery, deck and accommodation spaces and their distribution and starter panels.
o Hotel Equipment such as fitted to Galley, Laundries, Provision Stores, Cabins, Communal spaces etc.
o Scientific fitted Deck Equipment such as Cranes, Winches, A-frames etc. and to any portable scientific equipment fitted to the vessel at any time.
o Fire detection and alarm systems
? To maintain all communication and associated equipment in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Safety Radio Certificate and to provide assistance to ships officers in the use and maintenance of the communications equipment.
? To assist the ships officers in the maintenance of navigational and safety equipment, including, but not limited to:-
o RADAR and ancillary equipment.
o Echo sounders
o Gyro Compass
o Weather Fax
o Auto pilot
o Internal aerial system
o PA Broadcast system & Talk back and telephone systems
o On board Computers designated for Marine use, incl. servers, printers etc.
o Ship to Shore satellite communications systems
o Navigation lights
? To satisfactorily complete the appropriate Pre-Sailing Checklists and to advise the Chief Engineer Officer when this has been completed.
? To be responsible for the safekeeping, issue, stock control and requisitioning - through the Chief Engineer Officer - of all spare parts and stores assigned to their care, maintaining comprehensive records of this using the vessel?s Storekeeper software.
? To work to the requirements of the Technical Manager and the Chief Engineer where appropriate, during refit, re-certification and maintenance periods, to ensure that the needs of all the on board technical/electrical/electronic requirements are fulfilled.
? To advise the Chief Engineer and Technical Manager of defects and/or modifications requiring attention in order to ensure the vessel?s future capabilities in delivering science.
? To become familiar with the duties of other Engineer Officers and to assist with mechanical repair/s in an emergency.
Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)
Internal:
? NMFSS ? to work in partnership with NMFSS Managers and staff.
External:
? SSC ? Liaise with the Shared Service Centre relating to Finance and HR issues.
Principal Scientist and scientific cruise participants
Special Requirements:
? The post-holder will be expected to travel worldwide on remote locations and onboard NERC research vessels.
? The Centre is not a legal entity in its own right. It is a collaborative centre between the Natural Environment Research Council and the University of Southampton. As such the post holder must establish and maintain key working relationships across both parties in support of facilitating the core mission of the Centre.
? To comply with the NERC Core Expectations and the University of Southampton Equal Opportunities Policy.
? To comply with local procedures.
? To observe Health & Safety requirements.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
? STCW95 Certificates
? PST (Personal Survival Techniques).
? Elementary First Aid Certificate.
? Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention.
? Electronic Navigation Equipment Maintenance Certificate
? GMDSS Radio Maintenance Certificate
? ENG 1 Medical Certificate of fitness ? without restrictions.
? PSSR (Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities)
? Scientific Research Vessel Experience.
Planning and Organising:
Good time management skills and prioritisation in situations of conflicting demands.
Problem Solving and Initiative:
