    Applications sent!

    Woohoo!

    So i've now applied to Maersk, Clyde and reluctantly Carnival UK as a Deck Cadet. I'm a little annoyed with CMT already becuase as I was filling in their online application they take the service offline why would they do that? haha. Then to make matters worse my own printer died. I went to teh library and what should have taken 5 minutes took an hour because all of their printers conveniently broke down at the same time...FML.

    I finally managed to fill one in and send it off by snail mail and the others online.

    What's the usual response time for these three? Do you think I should apply to others? To be honest Cruise lines are my idea of hell, so that is really a back up plan and i feel as though I should have 3 main options.

    I'm so glad this forum exists it has really helped me, anymore help you could give would be thoroughly appreciated.

    One final thing, I know it has been asked time and time again but should I be successful in getting an interview, can anyone give me a detailed explanation of the Maths test segment? It's been a few years since I've done any maths, and while I can remember most things it's not my favourite subject. Should I revise anything specific such as Basic Trig?

    with maersk its 3-4 weeks mate they have ALOT of people applying from what i hear,

    the maths is ratio stuff, sequenced numbers, basic maths adding and subtracting
    Be what you want to be not what other people tell you to be

        Maybe worth applying to SSTG , they take on quite alot of cadets and lots of varied companies and unlike clyde you get too choose your company

          a month seems the standard waiting time so i guess i'll just have to keep myself busy until then. Ah that's super basic maths then, i'm sure I can wipe away the cobwebs on the day hehe

              and with SSTG no aptitude test's for the majority of the companies , although a quick GCSE maths test couldnt do any damage just to get a feel of it again . good luck

                yeah i'll print off some practice papers and see how i do hehe. Right so that's 4 applications away.

                Here's a question, you know during your sea phases (assuming you are living in the halls) do you temporarily move out so that you don't have to pay rent? I don't really get how that part works. Obviously they wouldn't make you pay rent if you aren't living there but I'm just unsure about the logistics of it...

                  You are only in halls / college during term time. During college phases they (normally) let you leave some gear in your room (at your own risk) for half term, christams etc, but at the end of the college phase you go home and thence to sea. At the end of the sea phase you go back to college as per thier term times etc, and move back in to halls OR get a flat etc depending upon your sponsoring companies requirements.

                    Sorry to be the bearer of potentially bad news ....
                    But at the stc Open day i was told that maersk aren?t recruiting any deck cadets for September 2011 apparently after my round of interviews they?ve decided they?re all filled up.

                      Same as normal then...I suppose I'm being a bit dense thinking it would be drastically different from any other uni. I'd rather know than not though.

                      oh my goodness MarkW you have ruined my life *dies*...haha seriously though? ah that's a bit lame but I hope they at least reject me in writing or with a generic email. Thanks for the heads up man.

                        Maersk told me similar lines last year , then i had an interview with them and was accepted . Although i did not accept there offer

                          Maybe they are just trying to reduce numbers or encourage more Engineering and ETO applications. They built 3 new ships last year and will presumably have another couple on the way this year that are bound to need staffing at some point. This is a pretty solid industry to be in at the moment because regardless of how severe the recession is people still need goods. I know they had a spate of voluntary redundancies but they still seem to be expanding. I'm not too concerned - if they give me an interview good times, if they don't I won't be happy but there are other sponsors out there.

                            Currently there is a HUGE containership building program going on, and despite some issues revolving around going to different flags etc, no matter how you cut it they will be needing bodies of all nationalities to man them up

                            Dont forget as some on here have mentioned they have more than one offer it maybe possible APM-M "think" they have all the numbers they need but if a few (of you) dont take up your offers then there will be spare palces again!
