  • What did everybody think about the Warsash Open Day?

So, I was just interested in what everybody thought about the Open Day at Warsash today. I found it most interesting and was able to find out a whole host of new information about the Merchant Navy. It was a good turnout, more than I expected: a few hundred I'd say!

Personally I really enjoyed it! Loads to see and do, pleanty of information available and some really helpful students around to pass on information. For me, the presentation was very insightful and set me up to go around and look at other things in context.

Really looking forward to starting now!

I was happy because I found out the result of my AIB from one of the reps there =D But otherwise, yes it was good!

Useful - presentations where good. Thou from my point of view not much new info as I had done some research.

The rolling timetable worked well so you could go and have a look at everything.

A more formal Q and A with current cadets set up like the other events would have been good so you could ask general questions.

Took me nearly 4 hours to get there... but was definitely worth it!
It was nice to get other cadets' perspectives, especially from fellow females. Was very useful...
Everyone was so friendly, and made me feel welcome... Thank you...
I am sorry for talking too much,

I thought it was very good. I also went to the smallish open day in June Last Year where we got to see some of the Cadets at work. It was a good experience and great to chat to the companies and other cadets.

Really interesting day. got loads of advice from the companies and the cadets and listening to their stories really made me impatient to get to the assessment day and hopefully further!!

Re: What did everybody think about the Warsash Open Day?

so now we know that when they reduce the number of cadets they take on it's beacuse of skyrocketing costs of office supplies...
                    thanks alot maddog

As for the Open Day, The Carnival woman was quite charming and so were the rest of the people too Got a lot of info, answered most of my questions basically

Alenah... 4 hours is nothing mate... try flying over from Sweden ^^
                    It was worth it though!

Now about these bags and pens.......ME WANT, ME WANT ONE NOW!!!!!!!!! Not seen a branded pen for years, even my filofax one is borrowed from the hotel in Egypt, you see thats how bad it was last year, resorted to taking pens from egyptian hotels

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Re: What did everybody think about the Warsash Open Day?

Chiefy and Ben, well that's what the Carnival representative said too, she was pretty impressed

I am committed, no doubt. The bottom line is that *this* is what I want to do, and *that* is where I want to do it, simple as that

So to answer your question Ben, in late June or early July hopefully I'll be packing my things and heading over I'll see it as my gap year, or something of the kind..

As to the pens... I must say, regreting it deeply now, BUT I didn't take a single pen from the Open Day. Makes me feel awfully stupid really but hopefully I'll have more opportunities Got a pen beck home from Hilton though... must've slipped down my pocket :O

                          Thanks for your support!

and btw... you must've seen me if you were there... Can't be missed with my black russian hat, can I
keeps my head warm I tell you...

Hi bryan_s, chiefy and just ben.
if I went by the pens in choosing a company i would go for Princess! :-)

Bryan_s: I remember you now at the Viking stand. You were just in front of us: my mum remembers your "great fluffy hat".
I'm in a similar situation to you although I do have British nationality but live abroad. However my domicile requirements are the same as yours as in living in the UK for a year. I too am prepared to move heaven and earth to get to Warsash as a cruise deckie cadet.

Re: What did everybody think about the Warsash Open Day?

Very well organised and informative. Very impressed by the campus and location. Plenty of tanker activity could be seen across the water, and various vessels coming and going. I was impressed by the honest opinions people were willing to offer. I now have a good idea of the real chances of obtaining a place as an "atypical candidate", and indeed some of the things that can go wrong on your seatime even if you get accepted. Careers events generally are staffed by people putting only the positive spin on things....this was much more useful. I think its fair to say that most of us are probably already sold on the idea of a career at sea before attending the open day in any case.

I found the contact with company reps extremely useful. By the way, has anyone had contact from BP via email? I have been trying to apply via their website, but so far no response.

                              Good luck fellow hopefuls
I'm no expert, but I really don't think it should be making that noise...
