  • Wondering where to start!!

Hey everyone, right after 12 years in the RAF as an engineer its time to bail out!!! Cut backs and spending most of my life in Afghanistan has taken its toll!!! Been looking to do this for a while but
Starting to look it to this seriously so first question is probably a stupid one but at 31 am I still competitive for sponsorship?
Second question is I have a HND so might be able to get on the quick one year course, however does anyone know if its hard to get sponsorship for this? As the companies don t get the tonage for it? I ve asked 8 companies so far all said no!!!???

Have you tried Carnival? They do fast track engine courses for degree guys but they might consider an HND.

Don't be concerned with your age. I know for a fact that certainly Carnival have taken on cadets approaching their 40's. It may put some companies off but there are definitely opportunities for you.

          Re: Wondering where to start!!

Your age is not an issue at all.

Having a HND is good BUT it's not the same HND as teh cadets do, while core subject will be the same (or similar if you did it a while ago) the specialist bits are..Naval Architecture, Marine Power Plant and the likes, the course title (was) HND in Marine and Mechanical Engineering emphasis on the marine bit. So the Math, Mechanics are the same but the Electro Tech, Thermo Dynamics and things arent.

Warsash have an open day soon (tomorrow) might be worth popping over to that assuming you are in country at the moment and talking to both the college and companies who are present.

I suspect your answer is that you'll have to do the four year course BUT assuming you pass, you then have various exemptions off your further tickets (certificates of competence)

No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Think the age thing was a stupid worry up until then!!! met a guy there thats 42! Probably get some stupid questions soon about interviews and which companies to go for guys!!! :-)

Maddog, how have you found it going from Military to the Merchant? I'm currently in the Royal Navy and was hoping there would be some sort of 'transfer' to make it quicker but no such luck by the looks of it!

Rowdy, are you an AET or something along those lines? There isn't a direct equivalent in the MN so you probably can't transfer much of your RN training and qualifications because of your branch. ME, X and Seaman Spec. types at least can, to an extent. You may be able to bypass some of the basic survival training and such on the basis of BSSC & ISSC training. Ask resettlement for advice and contact the MCA, they quite often make allowances for RN experience and training.

                    Re: Wondering where to start!!

AET, I have contacted the relevent people and basically completing a full cadet scheme is my best option with it covering everything ect ect. I suppose at least I have that experiece/training which will give me an advantage over the 'average' cadet!

I would say that you have the advantage of a seafaring background, but you've probably never left Culdrose. :-p

                        Re: Wondering where to start!!

Quite the contrary! I have been at RAF Cottesmore for near enough my whole career...Hence one of my main reasons to leave the RN is so I can actually get some decent sea time in, apparently you dont join the RN to go to sea...

Naval fixed wing! Probably as far from the sea as you can get whilst wearing dark blue.

Naval Sh*Te Wing! I have worked there yes...lovely place (spent 3 years on NSW with 1 month of that at sea)

                              Hi there all,
Daft question incoming! Left the RN a year and a half ago. Had a similar situation to Rowdy, I was an OM(C) / AB(CIS) whatever they are called now. Have just started looking into MN, Phoned MCA who are sending me info on equivalent qualls. Looking at deck officer at GCNS. At the moment I am drowning in information and trying to find where to start!

Managed to get some decent sea time in my service. Done time on 42's and carriers, lots of bridge time and copious amounts of time on upper deck work (life as an OM). Got mixed up with the old green death a few years ago and spent the last few years of my RN time in sand. Decided that the civi life was calling after my 3rd op tour.

My question would be where to start? Have just spent a ungodly amount of time sending off application letters to all and sundry. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated guys.

                              Thanks all.
