  • Any Shell Deck Crew?

    Hi,
Starting a deck cadetship with Shell, anyone have any insight of what to expect? The feel from the interview was the sea time might be on LNG tankers (Qatar/Singapore?).. Been at sea for 3 years doing slightly different work so not a total newbie but new to the Merchant industry. I'll be fine with the college phases & short courses as i've done most of it before but what's the sea time like with Shell, what were your experiences / daily routines / highs & lows etc..?
    Thanking you!

You're probably right about being on LNG as part of the Nakilat project: http://www.nakilat.com.qa

hours of "Computer Based Training", all-enveloping safety culture, friendly mixed-nationality crews.

your question is a little vague, i know British Shell deck cadets and officers, and can find out answers for you.

Don't scoff at the Computer Based Training. It serves a purpose!
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

It probably does, but possibly not the one advertised... By the 80-20 Rule... 20% of it seems useful.

          It's a requirement for Tankers.

If you want to do business with an Oil Major, then they expect you to have a TMSA rating (Tanker Management Self Assessment) which is a "voluntary" process. Part of that is having some form of CBT on board which the crew can use and slowly advance with.

It does work, but is rather useless to Cadet's so don't scoff at it.

I will scoff at it, because even superintendents know and admit that it doesn't work
It's just a cheap and quick way of piling through yet more paper exercises.

20%... are you going to state that you can remember the content of your CBTs?!
Whatever you learn, it's primarily by showing it to a cadet (or chief) after doing it yourself a few times, after someone showed you; the CBTs simply reduce the amount of time available to do that.
If they gave you hard copy of the content of CBTs to study; then did a proper test that was not comprised of fixed multiple choice questions that you can pass without understanding, simply by a process of elmination, then I would agree with you. That isn't the case; so it absolutely does deserve scoffing at - in fact it's a duty to scoff at it
