The thing with Maersk is it wasn't just the cadets they let go, as there was over a hundred redundincies within the container side of the company. If you have to let go of qualified experenced officers you cant then take on newly qualified officers.
I know of quite a few of the newly qualified officer getting jobs on the tanker and supply sides of the company.
It wasnt a plan of maersks not to keep on the cadets its just one of those things that happened. When those guys started their cadetships the company didnt know about the global recession and I believe that they now tell cadets during their interviews that they might not get a job at the end of the cadetship.

Surely it's better to be honest about the fact that you're just a tax break, as opposed to implying they will have a job at the end of their cadetship, then cutting them lose just before they get their tickets, as Maersk apparently did.
Not defending Evergreen as I have also heard poor things about them, but at the end of the day, the SSTG should, or in my case made it pretty clear you weren't guaranteed being kept on after your cadetship

Probably the fact they were told they would have no job prospects at the end of their cadetship and that everyone on board speaks a different language to English. Maybe they felt isolated - I also know of two Officers (now) who left Evergreen during their cadetships.

Don't panic-it's a bit of a long process, but all worth it when you arrive; utterly bewildered and terrified!! And if you go to Warsash, they get in quick with a tasting menu of the various poisons on offer during your freshers week....Lord, I despise that phrase.

Same boat here. And just to put it in perspective the wait's only about the same as people's UCAS applications so no worries

Hi I had my interview with sstg in October which I am now with, I have been told that the sponsor companies won't make contact until late feb march 2011 is there any chance I won't get a sponsor feels a little late as I've heard others got there's near on instantly. I requested saga (who I have worked for for 2 years in a different department which are a great company) TUI, Evergreen and Gardline LTD has anyone had experience with these companies ?

Also know of people who had bad experience's with evergreen , certianly in the engine side

From word of mouth I would suggest to look into Evergreen, two cadets I know who are with them both left the company after spending two months one there first vessel ( both separate vessels ). They are both now with North Star.

Thanks for the reassurance I defenetly don't need the lecture :-) I actually found I worked more hours and a lot longer contract for less money. I'm not to bothered I'm happy to go on a container vessel as well as cruise liners. Thanks for your help

Hi and welcome!

I wouldn't worry about it, most of the companies don't start interviewing until March-June for the September intake - especially the cruise lines.

If it's cruise ships you want to work on, since you already have some experience of what life onboard is like you could always apply to the other cruise lines, assuming you haven't already, while you wait - you arnt committed to SSTG until you actually start college so if you get a better offer you can turn them down. (other cruise lines being Carnival UK, Viking Recruitment (Hal and Fred Olsen and windstar)).

I'm sure you know the life is a bit different between deck/engine and hotel - no long days off (but since you were spa and not shop i guess your used to that) being the biggest difference :-) so I won't lecture you on all that.
