  • Females on a ship

    Hey

Myself and another female cadet go on ship in febuary for the first time. The ships are crewed by purely Indian officers and crew, and we have been told we are the 1st females to be sponsered/employed by the company

i know this has happend before, do they just treat us like normal? i would like to think they would, its just we have been told some people dont like haveing women on a ship.

    thanks in advance.

First Point:- accepting the fact !
Once you are on board, I suspect they will accept that fact - they won't really be able to do anything else.

Second Point:- How will they treat you ?
Not possible to answer that one, with any degree of certainty.
It will largely depend on how you treat them, how you conduct yourselves etc., etc - at least that is the most likely scenario.
Behave like a couple of "tarts" and that is precisely how they will treat you, in all probability.
Behave as decent ordinary human beings and thats how they will likely reciprocate.
Treat them, as you would like them to treat you - and that's what will happen - more than likely.
That's about all that can really be said, and be aware that there are exceptions to "all cases."

Just because your the first female cadets with that company doesnt mean that your going to be the first women they've ever sailed with. Chances are you wont be.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.....

I would second this; while I was at GCNS there were several Indian females doing the workshop practical course, so lady sailors from the subcontinent do exist.

This is true, women at sea are more and more common now. I know several girls (qualified officers aswel) serving on cargo ships with mostly men and they have a great time.

I'm sure there'll be no problems, if anything they'll be glad to have you there

For those who haven't started yet, Nautilus provide some decent support to female cadets and have talk at college about what to expect. Well, it's meant to be decent, I wasn't there for obvious reasons!

Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

                  Thought he might have been.
There are lots of agencies offering help and I wouldn't be surprised if the company has been looking into it because you're the first intake of female cadets

Be friendly and polite, but be careful when drinking with them, when you're on a ship with 20-100 guys who've been at sea for 8-12 months they will be very keen to get your knickers down. They can be very charming and sweet, or they can be pretty sleazy, personally my experience of indian guys hasn't been that great, not on a ship but when I was travelling out there. I've got a lot of philipino and indionesean crew on my current ship, and they ply me with booze when I'm down in the crew bar, they're all nice guys but you gotta be really careful not to let them think you're leading them on.

Please be careful, and like S4RB's says, watch it around the booze. Basically take on the rules of the old finishing schools, be very proper, keep your distance and bloody well do your bit to get more women into the Merchant Navy-the entire industry will be better for it. Best of luck, and let us know how it went.
