  • How long does it take?

I applied to Clyde in September for the January intake. Shortly after i got a letter confirming they got my application, and they would be in touch in due course.

So far though I've had nothing back, and it's getting quite late in the day now surely? Even if i was rejected they promised me a reply. Is it normal to take this long?

Waiting for news is driving me mental. Should i get in touch with them and push for a reply? If i was rejected I'd like to know why, for purposes of future applications.

    Any comments/advice would be awesome.

Clyde have a Facebook page, might be worth popping a quick "how are things going" message on there if you're not keen on phoning/emailing.

    Have you applied anywhere else?

Applied to SSTG at the same time. Assuming I've been rejected by them though, as they said i would not get a reply should i be rejected.

Recently sent off applications to Bibby and Maersk. Got James Fisher ready to send off too. These would be for September 2011.

Think i might drop by the Facebook page. Almost emailed a few days ago, but didn't really know what to say. I didn't want to seem to pushy or anything.

I applied in Jan 2010 and received a letter in Feb 2010 stating next stage would be to attend an interview. After 6 months of waiting i received a telephone call from Clyde inviting me to an interview in Bristol the following week (Aug 2010). End of Sept 2010 i still hadnt had any feedback from interview so i telephoned them and they confirmed I was successful and will start in Fleetwood Feb 2011. Due to high applicant numbers I think its quite a lengthy process. I would say if you applied in Sept 2010 it will more than likely be for Sept 2011 intake.

Yeh maybe. The application form i filled out was specifically for January though, but I do find it hard to believe that I'm going to be interviewed then accepted in time for Jan/Feb now.

Having said that some lad on Facebook group asked when the interviews for Aberdeen would be, and they aren't for another 4-6weeks! I'm going to drop them a line.

Ye Jan may be cutting it fine interview - acceptance then all the paperwork to fill in and send off. Plus arranging a medical may not make it in time. But i do remember last Sept Clyde posting on their FB page about clients having more spaces available for the Sept intake so you may be in with luck.
Only downside is if you want cruise ships not one cruise company who works with clyde is recruiting for Jan 2011 intake only Cargo/offshore type companies so that maybe a point to take on board. Off the top of my head it was
            K-Line Bulk Shipping
            Wilhelmsen
            Zodiac
            Maritime Education Foundation
            Vroon

They are the 5 of 9 Companies looking to take on cadets for Jan 2011.

Re: How long does it take?

According to Clyde's website, it is still possible to apply for Jan 2011 if you're going down the engineering route. I applied for Deck officer like, but this gives me hope

Cheers for the info regarding the companies recruiting for January. Cargo/offshore type is what I'm hoping for anyway, so that's all good.

I applied for a load about a month ago and out of those SSTG replied inside 12 hours and the rest are non replys as yet. Try giving them a bit of a metaphorical poke with a sharp stick and see what they say?

Yeh, SSTG were great to be fair. Got a reply within 12 hours, promising me a reply within 28 days if i reached interview stage. No reply = rejection. Unfortunately that deadline has long since passed for me

Giving Clyde the metaphorical stick poke via Facebook. They seem to be good at replying to queries.

Sounds good. Good luck then. Interview with SSTG is booked now so we'll have to see how that goes.

Re: How long does it take?

Good luck in your SSTG interview Ash, I must say mine was without a doubt, the most pleasant and all round interview I've ever had, though to be fair it wasn't really an interview.

Was more an informal chat, what attracts you to the job, your interests, some questions that sort of probe how much you've looked into the role and if you know what it will entail.

One thing that really surprised me was how open the interviewer was about the tonnage tax, I'd expected it to be a dirty little secret, that didn't get mentioned, that many companies were simply after a tax break.

My only regret was that I hadn't made it sooner, so there would have been more January positions available, as opposed to now having to wait till next September. It was also mentioned in my interview, as if true you'll probably be told, that Deck is fully booked for Jan as well.

Anyway, as I said, good luck, and I hope your interview goes as well and is as pleasant as mine did.
