  • What are Maersk like?

    Ok

All of you by now know my situation as i can't stop going on about it.

But to keep my spirits up I thought i would ask some questions on what i see as my biggest chance at this.

So Maersk I know theres a few of you on here who are training with maersk and some who work for them and help train people so here goes the basics (This also stops me PMing everyone haha.)

What is you training allowance this is purely for the fact of i plan to move into the halls and need to work out if i can keep the wheels i mean car if i cant bye bye car though i don't mind as it means i will have managed to get in which is a bonus.

Tour lengths? I would guess its 4 months on deep sea but i know some companys work things differently. Again I wouldn't bother me im just curious.

The chances of a job at the end as i know the current situation the country is in though you would hope it improves by 2014-2015 haha.

And the big one what are the interviews like and tests??? I have heard a few different stories but what did you guys encounter???

Thanks guys for the help and lets hope they get in touch with a interview date for me

    Re: Maersk

Hmmmm tour lengths 3-4 months, chances of a job depends, current lot all where found jobs with other companies, but again that situation in very fluid at the moment, so who knows.

Interviews, like any be alert, watch the news, appear to be interested in engineering / the world outside, clean smart appearance.

Testing are those wiered american phsycometric testings I dont think you can pass or fail just tells them whats going on in your head.

As for the colourblindness yes do stop bainging on about it if the first thing out your mouth at an interview is about that then dont be suprised to be knocked back DO NOT LET it define you. You are you not your minor colour issue.

Money no idea, though I do remember when at college there was those with cars who didnt drink much and those without who did (I didnt learn to drive till I was 29...nuff said!)
    Trust me I'm a Chief.

Views expressed by me are mine and mine alone.
Yes I work for the big blue canoe company.
No I do not report things from here to them as they are quite able to come and read this stuff for themselves.

Thanks chiefy I hope not to even mention the colour blindness I would rather forget it is there to be honest.

As for a interest in engineering it is really all i want to do I chose that area to concentrate in cadets as we had marine engineering levels also got my RYA ticket etc and I did mechanics at college for the basics of engines and doing engineering systems at the moment to help my maths etc cover quite alot of good stuff.

i do like a drink but I wouldn't call myself a big drinker as i drive alot but the car isn't important if i get in as i would hopfully be in glasgow and not even need it.

        Re: Maersk

Don't quote me on it, but my firends brother is with Maersk, it's how I initially ended up researching the Mn, and I believe he is on 600 a month, with basic expenses, uniform travel etc.. supplied, though not accomodation like some sponsors.

If that's true, it's slightly better than Clyde marine, though form what I gather worse than most other places, though manageable, if you develop a taste for white cider.

          Re: Maersk

I don't know much on Maersk, only that they're very popular for cadets (being one of the most well known MN companies).
For pay im sure its around 400 or so (not quite sure) but from what I was told by Maersk cadets in my phase (living in the halls) is they only had around 120 a month for thereselves to spend. And as far as I know this is the lowest payed from companies.
Maersk will be a good company to go with though with your situation, im assuming being big that they have encounterd plenty of these things before

            Re: Maersk

Maersk salaries aren't as low as ?400, they're in the ?650+ range, depending on course and year.

Maersk are certainly a popular company. They weren't able to place all of their qualified cadets this year, but I believe they were all fond jobs elsewhere.

              Re: What are Maersk like?

its 160 a week i think then 110 taken out for accom so they have 200 for themselves a month which is the lowest paid .

                Re: What are Maersk like?

Depends on what college you're at - accommodation in Warsash isn't as expensive. It also depends on course. I believe Maersk are also uplifting salaries from next year to bring them into line with the higher payers, though Maersk are certainly not the worst paid.

                  Re: What are Maersk like?

clyde are on 169 i think , dont quote me on that . although with clyde it differs with companys .

Same situation with SSTG some folks are on the standard ?333 others ?443 , ?500 , ?600 this is with accomodation paid or if you live offsite you get ?440 added . they are all phase on saleries , and you get a ?1000 pay rise every phase

                    Re: What are Maersk like?

                    Thanks for the info guys,

Yeah since they are so big they seem to just deal with your problems and get on with it if they want you they will take you simple well i think so anyway.

As for money it isn't that important to me the training is it is only so i know if i can keep my car or not again not that important as i can always buy a another (better) one after i finish

spoke to them again today at a open day went along for a wee look the nice lady told me to e-mail them again and mention her name etc so then my name is knowen to them giving me a slightly better chance of a interview she also again had no issues with my restriction and told me to keep going which was really nice to hear. Well from what i heard from her as she had lost her voice a bit and struggled to speak.

So i shall now just wait i suppose northern marine are also gonna phone after i spoke to them today so wait and see what they say.

As far as finances are concerned, remember that you may be eligible for Student Finance from phase 1 on the FD course or phase 3 on the HND course.

?190 a week in your final phase...

Although I doubt you will need student finance. I lived alrightish off my CMT salary.

                              Re: What are Maersk like?

Maersk are on ?7200 for HND route at present, although in January all HND cadets are getting a 10% wage rise and all FD cadets are getting a 5% wage rise (I believe at present FD earn in the region of ?8000-ish). Uniforms, including the warmest jackets in the world and some sexy hold all's are all provided (and every other companies cadets generally comment on how well Maersk cadets are kitted out) and your sponsorship allowance goes up by ?500 each year of your cadet ship(starting this year) . On the HND route you usually end up with ?160 a month after paying your halls, which is cool enough as the only thing to buy is shower gel and the likes, snacks and beer but I would recommend it very good company so far (for me anyway) SSTG pay more........ as do Carnival but meh, the possibilities are endless with Maersk.

If you mention your colour blind to them, they wont dismiss you all together, but they will ask you to do engineering instead of deck usually, so u should be fine
