  • More information regarding Shell?

    Hey everyone

I have been invited to an interview with Shell next month and I was wondering if anyone has been a cadet with them recently and can tell me abit about their experiences?

    The usual I guess:

    Pay?
    Treatment?
    Time on ship?
    Time alongside?
    Places travelled to?
    Duties undertaken?
    Etc.....

    Thanks
    Amber

    Re: Shell?

Can't answer from personal experience, but my coursemate is with shell, and he found it was great in terms of training.

I think he did 6 months on board, and got 4 hrs shore leave in that time. From the sound of it he got shafted by the other cadet on that front though (he found he had 'volunteered' to stay on board for watch while the other one went ashore several times) but the upshot was that he got given much greater responsibility and got a much better report at the end of the trip. He said he was pretty much treated as an extra 3rd mate much of the time, working 14 hr days doing a lot of stuff on the bridge. He was going around Africa for most of the time, and while they didn't spend much time alongside (loading/discharging took about a week but I think it sometimes got broken up by various changes of berth etc) they did spend a month at anchor waiting to be told where to take their cargo. I could ask him to email you if you like, (though can't promise he'll do so...)

        Re: Shell?

hello, i was a shell cadet, im now a 4th engineer.

its not bad, the people in the office on the IOW treat you well, your interview should be nice and easy. if the training manager hasnt changed, he is a top bloke.

the pay is one of the better in college at least top three, so you wont be short of beer and petrol money!

in my experience the treatment is good, i havent had to sail with any T****s. The time onboard is in line with the MCA requirements for orals, you may end up doing an extra week or two but thats just to ensure you have plenty of time in your discharge book for the oral examiner to have a look at.

as for time alongside, mine has been ok. first ship i was on was in port ever week, every 2nd i had the chance for shore leave - it was in japan, so not to shabby.

the 2nd ship was a VLCC, so that was ****. other than a two week drydock in singapore!! i think i got 6 hours ashore in 4 months!

as a cadet i found it took time to gain trust from the engineers already onboard before they would let me loose with a spanner, that was a bit frustrating but i looked at it from there point of view and just sort of went along with it....

14 hour days sounds a bit excessive, it sounds like the chief officer was taking advantage a little.

dont forget you are a cadet, you have no responsibility and are there to learn! so dont end of doing lots of ****ty jobs, dont get me wrong you should get involved in as much as possible but dont let yourself end up chipping the decks and doing watches at the same time!!

        hope that helps!

Do shell provide uniform or do you have to buy it?

Shell provide uniforms, they send you a form to fill out with sizes after a successful interview ;o)
