  • Clyde Marine Interview

Hello, I have an interview on the 12th October with Clyde for Engineer Cadet. I have read all the littitare they have sent me and was wondering if anyone out there can give me a few more pointers on how to be successful?

Also what technical questions am I going to be asked?

Any suggestions will be most helpful

    Dan.

    Re: Clyde Marine Interview

best thing would be to memorise the information from the cd they send out, watch the news so you can answer the current affairs style question.

I didn't get asked any technical questions. They were more along the lines of what do you think an ETO does on a typical day, what attracts you to this career, some role play type questions (you have to tell the ratings they can't go on leave until the engine is fixed etc delivering bad news etc). In another interview I got asked the difference between a petrol and diesel engine, so not rocket science.

Sorry I can't be any more specific but the interviews have to have a few surprises or CMT will come and get me for divulging too much.

As your transferring fro the RN, I would think the bulk of the interview will be about this. In my case, we had a long chat about my career change from finance.

Difference between petrol and diesel engines you say.... well ermmm just the fuel.....
however the proper question is whats the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines...../pedant

They did ask me about difference in the engine when it came to petrol and diesel engines.
Like Chris said, learn everything off that CD, watch the news and turn up on time and dressed smartly and you shouldnt have a problem.

I remember my interviewer asking me what I thought about Greenpeace chasing oil tankers!

So tell the question is wrong The blind them with science........but seriously that question IS wrong, deisel engines in a car are 4 stroke, at sea the gennys are diesel BUT 4 stroke where as (real) main engines are 2 stroke........I say real and discount cruise ships as plainly they are not real as in a previous post it has been pointed out that to fit all the ranks onboard they had to invent new stripes and longer sleeves for the uniforms

Greenpeace chasing tankers....is that a euphamism?!

LOL! Nah, he was curious as to my "views" on the matter.

I didnt want to be asked difficult questions when I was jet lagged, tired, dehydrated, soaking wet from the lovely fleetwood weather and generally unhappy (but appearing happy). Somehow I still got in!

diesel and petrol engines... Thats what the engine engineers are for, I'm only interested in the generator stage and beyond.

You need to learn your Engine Control systems my young padawan, as governors all act differently and are affected by the type of prime mover and can make the alternator do strange things

thats sounds a bit more advanced than the star delta motor windings we've looked at

CD - From memory, it told you about ranks, watches, types of ship, the names of the sponsors who work with Clyde.

Star and delta - Obviously not at the same time.
