  • What do you think?

    Hey guys,

I have put up a couple topics since joining and im looking for your opinion my first topic was me having a colour vision issue (still to have my further testing) and my academics are in line but not amazing.

Now basically how i see my situation at this momment for applying is my eyes are going to be a bug bear my grades wont help alot but i have other qualifications that might help me and my profile and background got it is amazing.

Although i did talk to steve from sstg and he said depending on what the tests say i will be considered like anyone else which is nice to hear as i fear it will put me further down the pile.

I just feel its going to be a much bigger fight for me due to my eyes being how they are and what not. I am going to start applying all over the shop and I do know about MEJG being colour blind etc and it is most likley possible.

So what im looking for is your view on my situation or any further advise you could give as this is playing on my mind and was hoping people who are doing it like yourselfs could help.

    Thanks
    Duncan

Have you not already said that you have a medical which says you can't keep a lookout? If so then there is nothing to stop you applying everywhere to be an engineer. My man is colourblind and he started off as an engineer and is now skipper of a 15m creel boat! You could be putting yourself at a major disadvantage if you are putting it all over your applications, don't hide it but don't lead with it either. To me it would look like you are unsure about what you want and are using it as a convenient excuse in case you don't get accepted.

As for your grades, it's not all that they look at so don't worry about it again. Just remember to highlight your good points and gloss over the bad!

          Raaaahhhhhhhh

Just fill the forms in already would ya?

You sound like you have your head screwed on right way up, not thick as 2 short planks and have a clue about what we call the pointy and blunt ends, colourblindness is not a disability, in fact the company need not know, you have a valid Eng1 which says "not fit for look out" which is handy as engine rooms arent known for thier views (unless the captain hits the quay a bit hard ) I am blind as a bat without glasses or lenses mine has said the same for 20+ years and hey, lo I happen to make it to the big penthouse cabin no worries So, stop with the worry, be honest and open and as mermaid says, high lite the pluses and gloss or the minuses, simples my young padawan

              Thanks guys

I suppose i was just worried about being put bottem of the pile due to my eyes but from what i gather from you that shouldn't be the case so the applications will start flying out shortly

              thanks

                Re: What do you think?

Only likely to be a problem with sparky stuff, so as long as you harbour no urges to become an ETO it won't make much difference career-wise. The important feature of warning lamps is they light up(except when chief has removed the bulbs ' because they're annoying'); the colour (and being able to recognise it)is rather less vital than spotting it in the first place and knowing what to do to put it out.
