    Hey there!

I read somewhere that as part of the sponsorship agreement the cadet has to live in student accommodation. Is that only with certain companies or is it true for all cadets??

    Re: Accommodation

You have to live in halls for the first phase, after that you can find your own, unless you're under 18, in which case you have to stay in college. At Fleetwood at least, I'm guessing it's the same at the other colleges.

The general idea being that you 'bond' with your coursemates and get together in the evenings to help each other out with work, and socialise with them too.

Same at Warsash too i'm afraid - for the same reasons.

Which kinda sucked for the two people who lived in Warsash - though they still unofficially stayed at home, but had to pay for the college room.

That was the case at GCNS but AFAIK it's company policy rather than a college mandated thing. The halls at Glasgow are pretty **** too. Unless you like communal showers, toilets without soap or loo roll and bathrooms shared one between twenty. Oh and the food was absolutely abysmal, again unless you like cheap and nasty curry every night.

The self-catering accommodation is a lot newer and better.

If you live nearby, or can get wallet-friendly accommodation for your first phase, pretend to stay in the halls for appearance to your company but in reality do your own thing.

            Re: Accommodation

Man this is quite a downer for me...i have not heard the best things about GCNS accommodation

I've been to uni and had all the first year halls experience (enough to last me a lifetime lol ) ...didn't think I would be ever going back to that again, just typical!

How does the self catering halls work then, are you put in with people of similar age? Or is it a big mix?

            Thanks, Sarahann

              Re: Accommodation

I'm not sure if you can get into the self-catering halls in the first phase. I'm thinking probably not. It's a mixture of people, not just cadets but the other students of the college too. The catered halls are pretty much just cadets, at least 50% of whom are Indian.

Nautical College is a shock to the system after uni - it's more like being back in high school.

If you're a girl you do have your own corner of the halls and the bathrooms are probably a bit better than the blokes'.

Me too. I'm in my mid 20s so would far rather live out of halls. Can't really be doing with the whole student lifestyle thing again.

Anyone know what accom at Warsash is like and are there many older cadets to hang around with?

                      Re: Accommodation

Warsash is shared accommodation (normally 2 cadets in a room during phase 1 - if you are lucky and stay there during phase 3 or 5, you may be able to get a single room).

I'm afraid that it is also shared bathrooms, although girls are all located on the top floor. Warsash seem to allocate you to rooms with someone else from your particular company during phase 1.

It's not exactly the student lifestyle you would of had at uni, as someone else said its very different - although be aware that there will likely be lots of lovely 16 year olds first time away from home partying and setting the fire alarms off - at least for the first few weeks anyway!

                        Re: Accommodation

Surely if you're paying your own halls fees you can request a single room. I know sharing may be cheaper and all that, but I've been living away from home for five years now, I like my independence!

That would be good haha, I haven't heard any good news about the GCNS accommodation either, I live only half an hour away, I wish I could just stay in my house if it's really as bad as everyone says!

Just stay at home! No one is going to come round checking your bed in the middle of the night. Or the pegboard at the front door. Yeah, they keep tabs on whether you are in the building. Will you be over 18 by the time you start? There's a curfew for under 18s...

On the very small plus side, there are no shared rooms. Unless you are Indian.
