Honourable Company of Master Mariners

The Honourable Company of Master Mariners is a livery company of the City of London. Founded in 1926 and based on HQS Wellington on the Thames, the organisation is now involved in many aspects of the maritime profession. The company runs an apprenticeship scheme where deck cadets are assigned a Master Mariner mentor.

What's in it for me?

The HCMM is very interested in providing encouragement and support to deck cadets. As part of the apprenticeship scheme, you will be assigned a mentor. Your mentor will stay with you from joining until you achieve your Masters' qualification. Your mentor will be an experienced Master Mariner, often with years of command experience. They may still be at sea, or they may be working ashore. The Company do their best to match you with the best mentor for you.

Your mentor will provide you with expertise and support, and is your gateway to the knowledge, experience and connections within the Company. It's a fantastic way to meet people within the industry and keep up-to-date and informed.

The Company also makes modest financial rewards upon achievement of your Certificate of Competency.

What's expected of me?

As an apprentice (or Junior Associate if aged 21 or over), you are expected to keep in touch with your mentor. This isn't at all onerous; the expectation is that you'd write or email at least once every six months. In reality, you'll probably find you have a much closer relationship with your mentor. The Company also like cadets to visit HQS Wellington as leave periods allow, and will reimburse rail fares for this purpose.

You are required to send a copy of your birth certificate and a reference letter from your sponsor company. All of the sponsor companies are quite happy to provide these letters so just ask.
